Tomorrow's match between two sides who competed in Thursday's UEFA Cup programme is an intriguing fixture. Should Spurs win the game, they would only be one point behind City; off the bottom of the table, and in the midst of 14 teams jostling for positions at either end of their section of the league table. One way or another, Harry Redknapp's arrival has invigorated the Spurs squad, who on Thursday produced the best football seen by a Spurs side for a considerable time.
Now they face a tougher test in the Premier League, but whilst City have scored as many goals as Arsenal, and less than only Chelsea in the league, they have conceded one more than Tottenham, and less than just 4 sides. An open and entertaining game is in prospect.
City might be the richest club in the world after the sensational take-over at the end of the transfer window, but of course they did not have time to complete a re-building programme, although they did steal the last day window headlines with the signing of that man Robinho, who has scored 6 of those 23 league goals, and one more in Thursday's game against FC Twente. Robinho's tally includes a hat-trick in their last league win, at home to Stoke. Since then, they have lost two games on their travels by 2-0o, at Middlesbrough and Bolton. City fans will be anxious for a win in this game.
The last game between the sides was played at Eastlands in March. Robbie Keane had put Spurs in the lead in the 32nd minute, when funnily enough, Corluka had failed to defend Malbranque's ball to Chimbonda, who fed Keane for a decent run and a shot across Hart's hands. It is of course ironic that those three Spurs players have left, and Corluka joined us after a disputed transfer agreement was resolved in August. City came back with goals from Ireland and Onuoha.
For the moment, 22 year old Stephen Ireland remains an important part of the City machine, and he has scored three league goals this term, supported by plenty of attractive and penetrating play. Another 22 year old, who joined City in the summer is Vincent Kompany, signed from Hamburg for a considerable fee, which he has justified. He is another midfield danger man, who can also defend.
City are missing Petrov for another 4 months, but of course they also re-signed Shaun Wright-Phillips, who will no doubt be subjected to regular Spurs taunts. Wright-Phillips is enjoying some success back on his old hutning ground. The City defence is supposedly shored by the presence of Ben Haim beside Richard Dunne, but that goals against tally tells another story.
Corluka will be available for this game, and may well replace Alan Hutton, whose form at right back has not been so good since returning from injury. Ledley may return, and I would hope to see Jenas fit to take a place in midfield beside Tom Huddlestone, who must surely play after his exciting contribution to Thursday's 4-0 drubbing of Zagreb. Pavlyuchenko may have to settle for a place on the bench after Bent's hat-trick.
Spurs have an excellent Premier League record against City, and were unbeaten at Eastlands until March. The game could go either way, but if Spurs can maintain the form shown on Thursday, then I fancy them to win this one too. I think I'll wear my replica 1981 shirt as a good luck charm!
