Be up for it, Spurs!
The only two teams to have beaten Liverpool in the Premier League this season meet tomorrow night in yet another crucial battle to escape the relegation zone.
Spurs beat Liverpool at The Lane on 1st November, when Rafa Benitez's men were top of the league, and when Spurs Captain Robbie Keane was in the middle of his short sojurn to Merseyside. Keane got a mixed reception then and has yet to score on his return to Tottenham. Until then, there will remain a good amount of scepticism about the value of Keane being bought for the second time. Robbie will have a chance to regain his status and reputation tomorrow.
Liverpool went on a run of a further 15 league games unbeaten before losing last Saturday at The Riverside, but by this time, had lost their top of the league status due to too many draws. Middlesbrough had been on an appalling run of 13 games without a league win, during which they scored only 4 goals. Boro had played 5 league games without a goal prior to Saturday's win.
Whilst Middlesbrough will no doubt be "up for it" after their win, it did come about after an own goal by Alonso, and a weird Rafa selection.
Every team fancies their chances against Tottenham, and Middlesbrough have surprised us several times in their Premier League visits. In September, 1998 a Boro side which included Spurs legend Paul Gascoigne beat us 3-0 at The Lane. David Pleat was in temporary charge of the team after Christian Gross had been given a tube ticket home, and this defeat was Pleat's one blot upon a spell of 7 games in charge, before the appointment of Gooner George Graham.
In April, 2000Spurs lost by the odd goal in five to a team that was skippered by Paul Ince, and which included Christian Ziege, yet to be signed by Spurs.
Finally, in September, 2002, Spurs were humiliated at home by Steve Mclaren's side, who also beat us 5-1 near the end of the season. This was a disastrous season in which a side managed by Glenn Hoddle lost their last two games by four goals.
Spurs' awful start to this season began at The Riverside in August, where Gomes, Modric, Bentley and Giovani made debuts, and Dimitar Berbatov made his one (substitute) appearance of the season before disappearing to Old Trafford at the end of the month. Only a Huth own goal at the end of the game gave Spurs a one goal difference, after the impressive Wheater and former Spur Mido had put "Boro" two up. Spurs had (as usual) shown an interest in Stewart Downing during the summer, as they allegedly did again this January, and no doubt will in the forthcoming close season! Downing will no doubt want to show all at Tottenham what he can do.
Was Boro's win over Liverpool a one-off, or does it herald a revival that will take them out of the bottom three? They've managed away wins at Wigan and surprisingly at Aston Villa in November.
Spurs can bring in the Carling Cup-tied players such as Cudicini, Chimbonda, Wilson Palacios and Robbie Keane for this game, whilst Fraizer Campbell will also be eligible. Ledley will not play and Jonathan Woodgate and Roman Pavlyuchenko will have late fitness tests.
We know that "Boro" will be "up for it", and we must hope that Harry Redknapp manages to get the right blend of fresh legs into the team after Sunday's gruelling Cup Final, and that he also manages to get the team in the right frame of mind to "Be Up for it, Spurs". I'll predict a nervy 2-1 victory.
