JD will be at the JJB!
Tme most exciting news for Spurs fans this week is of course the prospect of Jermain Defoe's second debut for us at the JJB stadium in Wigan today. Defoe's signing was finally concluded and ratified on Friday, so it is true to say that technically, Spurs did parade a Portsmouth player at White Hart Lane on Tuesday night.
Jermain's last start for us was less than a year ago in the 2-0 win over Sunderland on January 19th 2008. he also appeared as substitute in the Carling Cup 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal and at old Trafford when we lost in last year's FA Cup 4th Round, before his move to the south coast.
Jermain's last Spurs goal was on New Year's Day 2008, when we lost 2-1 at Villa park. Jermain has scored 43 league goals in 138 games for us, and 63 goals in all competitions for us since he first signed in January 2004. Defoe's first Spurs debut was on 7th February 2004, against Portsmouth, when he of course scored, as has been his wont on every major debut he has made. Let's hope this trend continues today!
Jermain served Portsmouth well, with 17 goals in his year with them, but it is true to say his form, and perhaps his morale, dipped after the departure of Harry Redknapp for Spurs. Defoe's last Pompey goal was in early December, and he picked up three bookings in his last 6 games at the club. Whilst we all look forward to next Sunday's home game against Pompey, there is important business to deal with in this fixture.
Wigan have been tending their wounds since their FA Cup exit at our hands on Friday 2nd January, and will be fresh as a daisy, and keen as mustard to get revenge as well as three more points to consolidate their position. Whereas Steve Bruce was missing key strikers Heskey and Zaki for the Cup game, they will be available today and will surely play. Chris Kirkland will return in goal, and Lee Cattermole is also available after suspension.
It will therefore be a different and perhaps a more resolute team that Spurs will face, but we too have no injury problems apart from the long-term absence of Alan Hutton. Ekotto's suspension will not conclude until after the Portsmouth game, but Jenas, Huddlestone and Bent are all available again for Spurs. Ledley king may make an appearance in this game, which would be somewhat hard on Michael Dawson, who impressed against Burnley in mid-week.
After his second-half showing on Tuesday, Jamie O'Hara must surely get a start, and play in front of Gareth Bale. Those returning players may have to sit it out on the bench with David Bentley.
Spurs have yet to lose to Wigan, and let's hope that record remains after today's game, but it will be tough, and despite our need for all three points, we may have to be satisfied with another draw. I am predicting a 2-1 win for Spurs though.
· Unfinished Business for Defoe
Stop Press - Spurs slipped into the bottom three again after yesterday's results, but a win would take them to their highest position of the season - 11th! Let's hope it happens!
