It was a cool overcast evening for this rearranged fixture played at WHL. Obika and Townsend returned from their loan spell at Yeovil where they had done well. A large crowd turned up to see if Spurs could clinch the group B title with a game to spare.
Spurs lined up with Butcher and Caulker at the back with Smith on the right and Cox on the left. Parrett and Kasim started in the centre of midfield with Byrne on the right and the returning Townsend on the left. Mason was up front in support of Obika.
Spurs kicked off attacking the Park Lane and looked in a hurry to wrap up the title with Byrne firing just over. Byrne got down the right and crossed to Mason who volleyed the ball first time past the diving Antal. Mason almost scored again a minute later when he controlled a long ball from Butcher and struck the inside of left upright and spun out of play to the right of the goal.
Watford responded with a shot from Byran that was saved. Byran then got clear on the left and his cross was met by Sordell but blocked by Butcher with Whichelow following up only to see his effort blocked as well. Townsend got clear down the left and went into the area where Antal brought him down to concede a penalty. Mason stepped up to score his and Spurs second on the night.
Butcher put the ball wide from a corner. Jansson saved from Byran before Byrne got through but his effort was blocked for a corner. Whichelow broke clear down the right and came inside to score from an acute angle across the keeper. This gave the Hornets a boost with Mingoia firing wide. Sordell was played in by Whichelow but his drive was saved. Sordell then fired wide and saw a weak effort saved by Jansson. Obika was played through by Mason but was foiled by the keeper. Townsend then crossed for Byrne to put the ball wide. At the other end Byran drove the ball wide.
There were no changes for the second half as Spurs looked to control the game. Smith got down the right but saw his effort fly over the bar. Townsend made space for himself before crossing hard and low which Obika and Byrne failed to reach. Townsend then had a go himself but the ball flew over the bar. Whichelow went closer from wide on the right when the ball hit the crossbar. Obika had a long range effort that the keeper turned away at full stretch before firing over from a Townsend pass.
Mingoia got to the line and crossed for the advancing Sordell who did not connect. Townsend saw his effort saved for a corner before Cox was fouled on the edge of the area having got down the left. Mason hit the free kick wide of the far post. Kasim hit a weak shot that was saved before he made way for Kane. Obika put his next effort over the bar and Townsend then drove wide before Obika also fired wide. Watford tried to push for an equaliser as Spurs looked to see the game out and Byrne found space to drive the ball over. Spurs contained Watford preventing them from getting in any more attempts before the final whistle.
Spurs started well but as the game went on they took their foot off the gas and played within themselves content just to hold onto the ball as much as possible knowing that the title was theirs with a game to play. Watford did cause them a few problems but you sensed that they could step up a gear if they had to.
The last league game is on Saturday when Spurs go to Birmingham. Inglethorpe will be looking ahead to the semi-final play-off game against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on the following Saturday. If they win that game they will entertain the winners of the other match between Man City and the gooners at WHL on the 23rd May.
