It was a sunny morning for this London Derby with a good crowd swelled by the proximity to the Hammers' patch. The visitors hoping to prevent Spurs from registering the first win in three games as they look to finish top of the group.
Spurs lined up with a familiar back four of Butcher and Caulker in the middle with Smith on the right and Cox on the left. Ekim, Parrett and Kasim across the middle with Mason in the hole behind Kane and Byrne up front.
Spurs kicked off attacking the North End and soon showed good approach play but found the Hammers back line too strong. An early free kick by Mason wide on the left was chested clear by a defender on the line. Mason fired over twice with late runs.
The visitors broke away, and Brown crossed for Bajner at the near post. His effort hit the post. Ekim played a long ball to Kasim in space who set up Mason for a strike that hit the crossbar. Kane tested the keeper with a a low drive that went for a corner. Byrne then set up Mason but he drove wide. Kasim played a ball in for Ekim to strike but Street was equal to it. Mason had another drive that was deflected for a corner.
A bad back pass let in Bajner who collided with Jansson as he raced out resulting in both players needing treatment. A weak header from Kane was easily saved by Street before Lee saw his effort saved by Jansson. Another header by Kane was saved and Smith drove to the edge of the area but fired wide. Caulker headed wide from a corner before Smith saw his effort saved for a corner. Ekim was booked after he lost the ball and caught Grasser late. Kasim saw his effort saved in added time at the end of the half.
Ekim was replaced by Nicholson for the second half with the sub taking over at left back with Cox moving into the centre. Nicholson’s first contribution was to win a free kick near the corner flag which was cleared for a corner on the other side. Mason flighted the ball to the far post where Kane headed back across to goal where Street somehow missed it and Byrne nodded in for the opener.
Byrne got down the right but fired wide of the far post. Kearns drove wide before Spurs got two quick goals to make the game safe. Mason ran onto a ball in the right channel and volleyed past the keeper. Kane made it three when he stooped to head home at the far post after the ball was cleared off the line.
Mason then saw his dipping volley hit the crossbar before his next effort was saved by the keeper. Barnett was booked for another foul on Nicholson in the corner before Edgar was booked for kicking out at Kasim after he lost the ball. Street dropped a cross at the feet of Byrne who tried to pull the ball back instead of going for goal. Kasim fired wide and Caulker headed wide from a corner before Carroll came on for his first game in place place of Kasim on the left of midfield.
Montano connected with a cross but Jansson saved well. Fredricks came on in place of the hard working Mason on the right and soon put in a good cross that beat everybody. Byrne picked up the ball in the left channel and beat the keeper from 20 yards. Spurs failed to keep a clean sheet when in added time Montano beat Jansson to the ball only for his header to come back off the bar where Abdulla following up had a simple tap-in.
It had been a frustrating first half with Kane and Byrne making little impact and on the rare occasions that the visitors got into the opposing half they looked dangerous. Thankfully Spurs got the opening goal early in the second half thanks to a bit of luck and went on to stamp their authority on the game. That goal drew the visitors out creating more space to attack. With Leicester also winning Spurs can wrap up the group title on Wednesday evening at WHL when they play Watford, with a trip to Birmingham in hand on Saturday, should they fail. Obika and Townsend will be available after their loan to Yeovil. The reserves finish their season on Monday afternoon at Havant and Waterlooville with a game against Portsmouth.
