It was a cold evening with a little mist for this cup-tie at the Valley. A good sized crowd turned out for the second meeting between the sides this season. I understand that Joe Jordan and Kevin Bond were in attendance.
Spurs lined up with Jansson in goal and the regular back four of Caulker and Butcher in the centre with Smith on the right and Cox on the left. Parrett and Kasim were in the centre of midfield with M単oku on the right and Townsend on the left. Bostock played behind Obika.
Spurs defended the Jimmy Seed end of the ground but made most of the early play forcing the first corner in the 6th minute. Kasim delivered to Bostock at the near post but it went wide. The Spurs backline were caught flat footed when Solly played a long ball over the top for Godfrey and Long to chase. Jansson came out quickly but the ball was flicked to the right and Long fired from a tight angle but Butcher got back to clear off the line.
Townsend痴 left wing cross fell to Bostock who hit the foot of the near post with his effort. After Long had a shot fly over the bar, Spurs won a free kick. Caulker met the ball at the far post and headed the ball down but Christie saved. Bostock found space on the edge of the area but he did not hit the ball cleanly and it went wide. Townsend put in a lovely low cross that just evaded both Obika and M単oku as they slid in. Parrett set up Obika but he put his effort over. Townsend put a chance wide and M単oku saw his attempt diverted for a corner.
Pell was booked for tackling Townsend from behind by the overly fussy ref and Kasim put the free kick over the bar. Charlton then had a good spell where Jansson had to make saves from Pell, Godfrey and Long with Stavrinou firing over. Spurs then went ahead with a shot out of the blue. Bostock found space some 30 yards out and fired a thunderbolt which beat Christie and flew into the top right corner of the net. In added time Godfrey played in Long for a chance which Jansson saved at the near post.
Pell had the first chance of the second half when he got down the right channel and fired over. A short corner routine had Townsend weaving into the area and driving low for the keeper to save. Bostock picked up the ball deep and advanced towards goal with the home defence not closing him down. He had space just to the left as Obika pulled wide so Bostock drove the ball low across the keeper for his (and Spurs) second goal.
Charlton came back and Steve Lozano-Calderon fired wide. Smith was booked when he blocked Lozano-Calderon痴 run. Townsend got down the left and came inside to drive the ball in towards goal beating the keeper but hitting the underside of the crossbar. As the ball came out M単oku got his head to it but Christie recovered to save. Spurs were now on top and Christie saved a low drive with his feet from Obika and then a deflected Townsend effort before pushing away another powerful shot by Obika. He could not stop Obika when he was played in by Parrett and got behind the defence.
Charlton did have another chance when Godfrey drew a save from Jansson. and a few minutes later Pell put his effort wide. M単oku went in late on Pell and received a yellow card before Inglethorpe made a couple of changes to use up a little time. Ekim replaced Bostock and Oyenuga came on for M単oku. There was still enough time for Oyenuga to get booked for a late tackle.
This was a better performance than in the earlier meeting which ended 0-0. Both sides then got drawn into a physical game whereas tonight it was more about football. Charlton kept closing down quickly in an attempt to break up Spurs normal game of slick passing and to some extent they did well. In the previous encounter Bostock had such a bad game he was replaced but here he showed what he can do.
In the next round our youngsters have been drawn away to Plymouth Argyle. The academy will have a game at MK Dons on Saturday morning before they fly off to Mexico to complete in a tournament.
