It was a cold evening for Spurs' opening game in this season’s Youth Cup against Sheffield United. The evening did not get off to a great start when it was found that some stupid idiot at the club had not produced any team sheets for the paying public. There was just some for the privileged few, thereby breaking rule 17a of the competition. I doubt we will be thrown out of the cup – unless there is a gooner at Soho square, but it is an embarrassment. With no teamsheet I have not been able to provide all the stats.
Spurs lined up with Jansson back in goal, Caulker and Butcher at the back with Smith on the right and Cox on the left. Bostock and Kasim in centre midfield with Parrett on the right and Townsend on the left. As usual Mason supported Obika up front. Oyenuga was on the bench for the first time.
Spurs kicked off attacking the Park Lane End and Lee had to save a low drive from Townsend in the opening minute with Mason following up to put the ball over the bar. Mason did draw a save from Lee soon after and the keeper also saved from Obika shortly after that. The keeper could do nothing when Obika was allowed to collect a long ball from Butcher by his defenders and place his shot wide of him.
The "Blades" had a chance almost immediately when Butcher conceded a free kick against Adams on the edge of the area. Adams struck one of his own players in the wall with the kick. Townsend put an effort over before Obika got behind the defence and pulled the ball back for Townsend to run onto at the near post, but Lee got down to save. Parrett played Mason in down the right channel but Lee got to the ball just ahead of the Spurs player who appealed to both the ref and assistant for a penalty. Mason was well off target with a free kick before going wide with another effort. Obika got behind the defence again but put the ball wide as Lee came out. Kasim fired just wide from distance as the half ended.
The second half continued as the first half ended with Spurs on the attack. Smith made a good penetrating run which was halted by Foster at the expense of a yellow card. Kasim took the free kick which Lee saved for a corner. When the ball was worked back to Kasim, his effort was also saved by Lee. Chapell fired wide before Spurs resumed their assault with a Mason effort saved by Lee and that was quickly followed by one from Smith. The second goal finally came when Obika robbed James and advanced on Lee before firing past him into the net.
Inglethorpe made his first change by replacing Parrett with M’Puku. Gee had a chance which was put over and Obika went close when he hit the side netting. M’Puku came inside and played the ball through for Obika to run onto and side foot past the keeper. Smith tried a long range effort for the visitors which sailed over before he was replaced during a flurry of substitutions. Caulker picked up an injury and was replaced by Byrne at the back and the hardworking Kasim made way for Ekim. Obika got through again but Lee came out quickly to save at his feet. Mason tried a delicate chipped shot which may have clipped the bar with Lee struggling. With almost the last kick of the match Townsend fired a shot from distance that Lee saved.
With Spurs safely through to the next round it will be back to the league with a visit to Bristol City on Saturday. The only worry for Inglethorpe will be the injury to Caulker who has played so well this season. Sheffield could not prevent the quick passing game of Spurs and the pace in all areas of the team. They tried to be a bit more physical in the second half but were too slow to catch them. Spurs began to showboat a little towards the end which I hope Inglethorpe will have a go at them for, as they could come unstuck against better teams. You only have to look at the last game where they conceded six goals.
