It's time for Spurs to end their record of failure at Bolton!
When we played Bolton at home last year, Spurs had just appointed Harry Redknapp as manager, and the team won its first league game of the season, under the command of Clive Allen, although Harry did have a word or two with the players.
On the other hand, when we went to The Reebock in January this year, we reverted to type and lost 3-2. I say "reverted to type" as Spurs still have not won a league game at The Reebock in 9 attempts. They did manage an exciting 4-3 win there in the Carling Cup in October 2004.
When we lost that last game 3-2, rumours of Jermain Defoe's injury had not been confirmed, and as the transfer deadline was on the following Monday, Robbie Keane had yet to be re-signed. Darren Bent was a second half substitution for Luka Modric, and scored both Spurs goals, putting us level, only for Kevin Davies to score a late winner for the home side. Wilson Palacios made his Spurs debut, but my reflection on the game was that Harry had used tentative tactics and set out for a draw.
It's time for Spurs to end this record of failure against Bolton!
I wrote earlier this week that it is going to take three very poor teams to be relegated from the Premier League this season. Two of the bottom places are already occupied by Portsmouth and Hull, who must be regarded as favourites to stay in that zone. I also said that there are about 6 or 7 teams that will be battling not to be the third team to go down. I regard Bolton as one of those teams, although they have returned to some form in their last 4 games.
Bolton's fans have yet to see a league win at their ground this season. The "Trotters" lost their first game 1-0 to Sunderland, then went down by the odd goal in five to Liverpool. Last time out they only managed a draw with Stoke, and that was thanks to an 89th minute penalty. Having said that, Bolton did beat West Ham last week to make the fourth round of the Carling Cup, when they will play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Bolton have managed two consecutive away wins at Portsmouth and Birmingham.
Manager Gary Megson's summer signings included Zat Knight from Aston Villa, South Korean forward Lee Chung-yong (who got his first club goal last week), and former Spurs midfielder Sean Davis. Unfortunately, Davis has been lost for up to 9 months to a cruciate knee injury.
Swedish forward Johan Elmander scored his first goal for Bolton against West Ham since December last year, although he has looked a danger in both his games against us. 32 year old Kevin Davies is still going strong of course, although he has only scored twice in 8 games so far. Israeli midfielder Tamir Cohen is the top league scorer so far, with three to his name. He's been on Bolton's books for two years now, but is only just emerging as a force to be reckoned with. He scored in both Bolton's league wins.
I've heard a rumour that Jermain Defoe's hand injury may actually include a slight fracture, rather than just dislocated fingers. That could be the encouragement that Harry Redknapp needs to start with Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane up front. The rest of the team may be unchanged bearing in mind Harry's praise of Tom Huddlestone's role at the back last week. I'd like to see Gomes in goal though in preference to Carlo Cudicini.
So, Bolton have yet to crack it at home in the league, and Spurs have yet to win a League game at The Reebock. Something has to give. A good friend of mine missed the Hull, Doncaster and Preston 5-1 wins, and can't make this game either. I'm tempted to back Spurs to win this one 5-1, but realistically predict a closer win, and will say 2-0.
There will be nearly 4,000 Spurs fans making the long journey for this game, which is an incredible statement about the strength of support for our beloved club. I'll be proud to be amongst the throng!
