Dare we be bullish?

This game has been quickly re-arranged after the postponement caused by the recent freeze. The match was originally scheduled to be played on Sunday 10th January, 2010, and once again is due to be shown on Sky Tv in the UK.

Most of this preview is as written in anticipation of the original date. However, since then Mascherano has served his suspension, and played at Stoke on Saturday, so should play tomorrow night. Glenn Johnson will still be absent, but now Benitez has additional problems because Torres, Gerrard and Benayoun are also missing. Spurs will have important absentees too. Aaron Lennon is still out, along with Benoit Assou-Ekotto. Ledley King and Tom Huddlestone are described as doubtful, whilst Alan Hutton, Jonathan Woodgate and Carlo Cudicini are also missing. That still gives Spurs a potential starting line-up of Gomes; Corluka, Dawson, Bassong, Bale; Modric, Jenas, Palacios, Kranjcar; Defoe and Crouch, with Robbie Keane and David Bentley likely to be on the bench, as well as Jamie O'Hara, who has returned from his loan at Portsmouth due to the embargo on them conducting any transfer business, including what would have been an exteneded loan.

Spurs don't win very often at Anfield. They have only ever won one Premier League game, and that was in the second season of the newly formed Premiership in August 1993. Spurs had lost their penultimate game of the inaugural season at Anfield by 6-2 on what was the last day of (official) standing in the famous Kop stand, but got some revenge in the August game with a 2-1 win, thanks to two goals from Teddy Sheringham, after Nigel Clough had put Liverpool in the lead.

Spurs started that 93-94 season so well, with three wins in four games, but after later losing Teddy Sheringham for so much of the season, they had a dismal run of 10 games without a win, and in fact only assured their top flight survival in the penultimate game against Oldham.

Spurs have only ever won 5 of their 66 away games against Liverpool, and famously went from 1912 (the year The Titanic went down) to 1985 (the year Garth Crooks scored the winner!) without a league win. Since 1993, we have won two big Cup games, both of which were memorable occasions.

Thankfully, Spurs do win their home games more often against "The Reds", and have won their last two home league games. On the opening day of this season, we won 2-1, with debut goals by Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Sebastien Bassong. Last season, we also won 2-1. That was the game when new Spurs manager Harry Redknapp allegedly told substitute Pavlyuchenko to "f***ing run about a bit", which worked as the Russian scored a last minute winner.

One of the 8 home Premier League games in which we beat Liverpool was on 3rd January, 2000, when we won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Chris Armstrong. Leeds were top of the Premier League table, and 11 of the teams in the league no longer play in the top flight. Arguably, one of them (Wimbledon) does not even exist, although MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon fans can debate that issue!

As has been the case in most Premier League seasons, Spurs were below Liverpool in the league 10 years ago, but our opening day win this season really was the start of a rot which set in and has seen Rafa's men lose 7 games. So, this week, we look down the table at Liverpool, and travel to Anfield in good heart, weather permitting.

I am not sure whether the absence of Glenn Johnson will be a good or bad thing for Spurs. He is an effective attacking full back, but defensively, I believe he has frailties that the likes of Modric and Kranjcar could expose. Assuming that Aaron Lennon is not fit, then both the Croatian attackers are likely to play, as they did last week against Peterborough. Gareth Bale is again likely to deputise for the injured Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who is missing the African Cup of Nations.

Robbie Keane and Peter Crouch will both be eager to play in front of the Anfield crowd, who will greet both warmly. One of them is likely to start on the bench, and I fancy that will be Robbie, who hasn't exactly had the best 18 months of his career.

Well, let's hope we get a game this time (once again there is a threat of snow), because I'm licking my lips in anticipation as well as the SKY TV team and their viewers. I am hopeful of that rare Premier League win, and even dare to be bullish, predicting a narrow Spurs win!
