Just who is Roberto Martinez?

Those who don't follow Wigan too closely might ask "Just who is (their manager) Roberto Martinez"? Well, the fact is that Martinez is something of a legend in Wigan, as he was one of three Spanish players acquired in the summer of 1995, when Wigan were in the old Division Three. Over the course of six seasons, midfielder Martinez played a total of 164 league games and scored 16 goals in the process, leaving in 2001, by which time "The Latics" were established in Division two.

Martinez went on to play for Swansea, where he started his managerial career, winning them promotion to the Championship.

It was no surprise therefore that owner and Chairman Dave Whelan (after whom the Wigan stadium is now named) signed Martinez to replace Steve Bruce who was lured by the new money available at Sunderland.

So far Martinez has led Wigan to something of a topsy-turvy season, in which they started by beating Aston Villa away, beat Chelsea at home, and ended Burnley's 100% home league record. On the other hand, Wigan lost 4-0 at Portsmouth, and have also suffered big defeats at the hands (sorry - feet) of Manchester United and Arsenal. As a result, Wigan have yet to reach the comfort zone in this season's Premier League, being just 4 points above the drop zone.

As always though, Spurs cannot be complacent as we failed to even score against Wigan in the league last season, drawing at home, but losing the away game in which Harry Redknapp played Ledley King in midfield. Wigan's scorer in that game - Maynor Figueroa - is their only injury worry, needing another five weeks to recover from a knee ligament injury.

Figueroa is a countryman of our own Wilson Palacios, who we must hope returns from his latest International trip in a better state than the previous two International breaks. Both these teams agreed to the extra day to allow players more time of such exertions.

This Sunday we can play "Spot the Frenchman" and no doubt our own Robbie Keane will be fired up to gain some revenge over any such person. Hopefully Robbie will not be suffering any pychological damage after the infamous Thierry Henry incident. Anyway, the Wigan squad includes three French midfielders, but only one of them has played for the French full team - former Birmingham player Olivier Kapo. Kapo has made just one substitute appearance in the league this season. 22 year old Mohamed Diame (signed in the summer from Rayo Vallecano) has played in 10 league games, whilst former Newcastle winger Charles N'Zogbia is ever-present in the league, and has scored one goal. I don't think there's much booing material there.

Both teams will have a "King" missing this week. In Wigan's case it will be forever, as former striker Marlon was sacked after his conviction and jail sentence for assault.

In Spurs case they will miss a most honourable man in the shape of Club Captain Ledley King, who is nursing a hamstring injury sustained in the Sunderland game.

Wigan's top scorer is Columbian striker Hugo Rodallega, whilst Jason Scotland (brought by Martinez from Swansea) has yet to score in Wigan's colours.

Spurs welcome back Aaron Lennon and Sebastien Bassong, but Luka Modric is still not training fully. Carlo Cudicini begins his long road to fitness (hopefully) which leaves Gomes only challenged by Ben Alnwick and Jimmy Walker. We must hope that Gomes retains his fitness, at least till January, although I personally seek it far beyond that. Gomes is our best (currently fit) player of the season, and is in great form.

At the end of the day, manager Harry Redknapp will have his usual dilemmas over which two strikers to play (Keane and Defoe will be favourites), and the characters and shape of his midfield (probably Lennon, Huddlestone, Jenas/Palacios, Kranjcar).

I'll take Spurs to win 3-1 and keep that top four slot for at least one more week, before we face the challenge of Aston Villa away!
