Defoe could be back this week!
Here's a funny story! When Spurs last played Blackburn 8 months ago to the day, in March, the referee was Mr. Howard Webb. In the Spurs Odyssey survey of over 230 respondents, Mr Webb was awarded a grade of 3.4 out of 10. After Tuesday night's game against Sunderland, that man Webb scored a 3.6. he's consistent anyway!
It's not that funny really, is it? Referees are in the limelight more and more these days, and it is so rarely for good reasons. Michael Jones, who is one of the younger referees in the Premier League missed Joey Barton's punch of Morten Gamst Pedersen on Wednesday night, and having reviewed the video evidence the FA charged Barton (quite rightly) with violent conduct. Incidentally, Barton has accepted the charge and will face his punishment of a three match ban. We weren't too happy with Mr Jones in our recent home game against Everton, when he showed undue lenience towards the visitors. It may be too much to hope for a game where the referee is not in the public eye tomorrow.
Blackburn were one of five teams over which we completed the "League Double" last season. At Ewood Park, Peter Crouch scored both goals in our 2-0 win. In March this year, Spurs won 3-1, with two goals by Roman Pavlyuchenko and one by Jermain Defoe. Gareth Bale was a convincing man of the match and put Michel Salgado to the sword in the same way as he did Maicon in the games against Inter Milan. Former Real Madrid man Salgado watched the Spurs home game against Inter in Sky's studio, so he will have been planning this Saturday's strategy for a while now! Salgado complies with manager Sam Allardyce's policy of signing veteran International players, although the average age of his entire squad is only marginally higher than that of Spurs.
The Blackburn team is likely to include two of Spurs' 2008 Carling Cup winners in goalkeeper Paul Robinson and full back Pascal Chimbonda. Chimbonda did himself no favours with the Spurs fans after disappearing down the Wembley tunnel when he was substituted, but of course Paul Robinson will always remain high in the affections of his former fans, who will be cheering both goalkeepers this Saturday. Robinson has regained a lot of confidence and form at Blackburn. He has no more clean sheets to his name this season than Gomes though. Spurs' only league clean sheet was on Day One at home to Man City, and Gomes managed his only other blank in the Champions League qualifier home game against Young Boys. A clean sheet is a commodity that Spurs desperately seek, and would be a good starting point towards securing the much needed three points in this game.
Rovers come to White Hart Lane on the back of two successive wins against Wigan and Newcastle that have dragged them away from the relegation zone and into the mass of 9 teams between 5th and 13th seperated by just two points. With a trip to The Emirates to follow for Spurs, they are the ones who have more need of the spoils this week. Blackburn have lost 5 games, but they have all been by just one goal, and recent defeats against Liverpool and Chelsea were tight, so Spurs need to look out again.
Blackburn currently have two Dioufs in their squad. Both are Senegalese. Both started on the bench at St. James Park. One is our old friend "Gobber" El Hadji Diouf, who of course played for Sam at Bolton. The other is apparently not related but is a 22 year old loanee from Man Utd - Mame Diouf - a striker by trade. Mame Diouf scored all three of Blackburn's goals in the Carling Cup win over Norwich, and then one in the defeat at home to Arsenal, but he hasn't scored since. Pedersen and Jason Roberts have scored one apiece in Blackburn's last two games, and another one of Harry Redknapp's former players - Benjani (aka Mwaruwari) - got his first goal for his new club against Chelsea.
Spurs are hoping for Jermain Defoe to be fit enough to be given a place on the bench this week, but Van der Vaart's striker is likely to be Peter Crouch, who has struck up a great understanding with the Dutchman, who will be looking for his seventh goal in his first seven home games. Crouch has yet to score a Premier League goal, but he has managed five in the Champions League. Roman Pavlyuchenko is not every Spurs fan's favourite, but he remains our leading scorer in this calendar year to date. However, he apparently had a bit of a tweak on Tuesday night, but will surely start from the bench, if at all.
Spurs fans went away frustrated on Tuesday night and sorely diappointed with their team's overall failure to seal a win. As it happens the results of Match 12 of this season's Premier League did not go as badly for us as they might have, so Spurs have another chance to maintain a challenge on the top four. They'd better take it this time! I'll go for a 2-1 win.
