LEAGUE CUP

Could there be a surprise debut for Spurs?

It's FA Cup Third Round week-end and Spurs are playing Charlton on Sunday not because they are on TV, but because Arsenal are, and they have been selected for ITV coverage today. We do kick off at 1.30 p.m., so those attending will miss the tie of the round between Manchester Un ited and Liverpool.

Spurs and Charlton have met in only three FA Cup ties down the years and have never met in the League Cup. As you might have read on Spurs Odyssey recently, Spurs first met Charlton in the Double season and in the Third Round. It wasn't as easy as we might have expected though. Charlton were in Division Two, and the margin was just one goal as Spurs won 3-2. Clive Allen's Dad, Les, scored two goals and Terry Dyson scored the other for Spurs.

In the 1984-85 season, Charlton were again in Division Two. Amongst their opponents in the league that season were current Premier League sides Wolves, Fulham, Birmingham, Blackburn and Manchester City. Spurs again made heavey weather of beating our lesser opponents, who took us to a replay before we conquered. Garth Crooks scored the goal for Spurs at White Hart Lane in the first half, but Aizlewood surprised us in the second half with an equaliser. In the replay. Tony Galvin and Mark Falco scored the Spurs goals, whilst Moore scored a penalty for the home side. Alan Curbishley played for Charlton in those days. That wasn't a great Cup year for us, as four days after winning the third round replay, we lost in the fourth round by the only goal at Anfield.

The third and last cup meeting between the two sides was 10 years ago in February 2001. We had met on the preceding Saturday in a Premier League stalemate, but won 4-2 in the Cup game at The Valley. Gary Doherty, who now plays for Charlton had scored our only goal in the Third Round at Brisbane Road, and he played for us in the 4-2 win without scoring. In those days we were never quite sure whether Gary was a centre half or a striker, but George Graham used him up front when Les Ferdinand was (as too often was the case) injured. Doherty scored three FA Cup goals for us that season, with one at Upton Park in an exciting 3-2 win, and of course the only Spurs goal at Old Trafford in a defeat against the unmentionables. Ultimately then 2001 was not a good Cup year for Spurs. Check out the fixtures page for that season if you would like to read more about some of these games.

It's nearly four years now since we last played Charlton, who were relegated in 2007, and whose demise has continued with relegation to League One, where they are in their second season, due to defeat in last season's play-off semi finals to Swindon, after finishing fourth in the table. They are fourth at the moment, but in some disarray, as manager Phil Parkinson was sacked this week after a 4-2 home defeat to Swindon. At the time of writing, Charlton have yet to appoint a replacement, but the sacking came after a failure to win a league game since November, at which time charlton were two points clear of third placed Colchester.

As a League One side, Charlton have had to play in the first two rounds of the Cup, and they have beaten Barnet (bottom of League Two), and non-league Luton to get this far. Clearly their priority is going to be to win promotion this year, but they'll be keen to give Spurs a run for their money tomorrow. Apart from Gary Doherty, there's another former Spurs player in their side too. Johnnie Jackson is in the goals for Charlton at present, having scored 13 goals in all competitions so far this season, and four in their last three games. Jackson was a Spurs junior who did make it through to the first team and scored his one and only first team goal for Spurs in a 4-2 win. Charlton were above Spurs in the Premier League at that time. Jackson had three years at Colchester after leaving Spurs, and was then signed for Notts County as part of their "Sven-led revolution". However, he left on loan initially but signed full time for Charlton this season.

On paper then, Spurs should win this game convincingly, but in the age of the Premier League having supremacy over even the FA Cup, Harry Redknapp has indicated that some key players will be rested. The good news is that Jermain Defoe has served his three match suspension, and Harry has indicated he will play. However some key players such as Lennon and Modric are likely to be rested, with likely starts for Corluka, Sandro and Kranjcar. Gareth Bale too will be left out of this one to give him more time to recover from his back spasm suffered on Wednesday night at Goodison Park.

Whether new signing Bongani Khumalo gets a debut in this game remains to be seen. The word is also that David Beckham will be at the stadium, and if his loan deal is finalised in time, he might even make a Spurs debut! Personally, I do not see him improving our squad, but would be happy to see him in a game like this. He can leave the rest of his influence on the training ground, or as a late substitute, and then of course, there are the shirt sales for the club in a potential two month loan period!

The Spurs squad is strong enough to deal with Charlton and I'll take them to win by two or three goals, let's say 3-0.

Did you know? Charlton have only ever appeared in two FA Cup Finals, and these were in consecutive years in 1946 and 1947. They lost the first to Derby after extra time in a game where the ball famously burst. The following year, also in extra time, Charlton were the victors over Burnley. The ball burst again!
