"Going for Gold!"

While Spurs were putting paid to Werder Bremen's chances of third place in Group A two weeks ago, Twente were giving Inter a fairly hard time in Milan, losing by a second half Cambiasso goal. Thanks to their goal difference and their results against Bremen, Twente are already assured of the consolation of a Europa League place, even if Bremen manage to pull off a surprise win against Inter. Spurs need to match Inter's result in order to go through to the last 16 as leaders of the group, and realistically that does mean winning this game. Personally, I so want to win the group which will give us a great chance of a decent draw, and progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League! Then it will be every man for himself!

Twente have plenty of pride to play for of course, and there is a bit of an agenda to this game, as the Dutch side will be after revenge for their 4-1 beating at White Hart Lane in September. Goals by Rafael van der Vaart and Roman Pavlyuchenko soon after the break set Spurs on their way. Pavlyuchenko scored two penalties in the game, and Spurs were actually awarded three penalties, with Van der Vaart putting one wide in the first half. Van der Vaart got sent off after an hour for a second yellow, for an over exuberant tackle near the half-way line.Twente were less than happy with most if not all of the penalty awards. This was also the match where Tom Huddlestone got away with elbow contact with Janko.

Van der Vaart is one of the three key players who played in that game and will be absent tomorrow. The others were Ledley King and Tom Huddlestone. Van der Vaart will be the biggest miss for us, as William Gallas has now admirably stepped into Ledley's centre-back shoes and is doing a good job as Captain. If I pose a question regarding how much have we actually missed Tom Huddlestone, it would cause a debate, but the fact is the results have been great since Tom got crocked with four successive wins and last Saturday's draw. I would though hope for Jermaine Jenas to be fit enough to partner Luka Modric in the middle for this game.

Twente have been in good domestic form recently, and are second in their league, only because of an inferior goal difference to that of PSV. Both teams are on 37 points after 17 games. Twente did lose three gamees on the trot, including the Inter defeat, but have recovered with wins against NEC (4-2 away) and de Graafschap (2-0 home) in their last two games. Janssen scored both the goals in Saturday's game and Ruiz and Janko got two apiece against NEC.

Twente are unbeaten at home in the Champions League, having drawn 2-2 against Inter.

This preview is of necessity brief, due to my travel plans, and is being published before the receipt of any team news. I suspect the Spurs team will be very similar to that which drew on Saturday at Birmingham, and that we will play in a 4-4-2. I am hopeful of writing about good news upon my return home on Wednesday lunchtime!
