Turn it on again, Spurs!
Roy Hodgson must be having a smug little grin to himself now and again! Earlier this season, it looked like Liverpool was a club too far for this 63 year old man who has been in management for 34 years. His term of office at Liverpool was quite disastrous, and since he left, Liverpool have been re-vitalised by "King Kenny". In the meantime "Woy" has re-vitalised West Bromwich Albion, who were unbeaten in in the first 6 league games since his appointment, losing only to Chelsea last week.
"The Baggies" have won two of their last three games, one of which was against Liverpool! West Brom are third in the current form table, taken over the last 6 games, whereas Spurs lie 13th on that basis. West Brom have also won two of their last three away games, a feat that I don't think their manager achieved in all his time at Fulham or Liverpool. Any away win was a rarity in that time!
West Brom were looking very much in danger of relegation when Roberto Di Matteo got his marching orders, but with three wins in their last five games, Hodgson has taken West Brom to 39 points and 11th place, with every probability now of being only the second man (Bryan Robson was the first) to manage the club when retaining Premier League status. Roy could become the man to take West Brom to their highest Premier League finish in 5 seasons at this level.
West Brom are not safe yet, but they've had a full week off, so they'll be fresh and well up for getting a result at White Hart Lane. Spurs haven't lost a home league game since August, but that defeat was against lowly Wigan, forming part of the evidence of Spurs' under-achievments against lesser-rated sides this season. When Spurs drew at The Hawthorns in September, West Brom were 16th and we were only in mid-table. It was the fourth game of the season, but that Wigan match had preceded it, and Spurs were already displaying some pre-Champions League match frailties. The trip to Bremen followed the Tuesday after our game at The Hawthorns, where Luka Modric had given us the lead, before Brunt equalised in the 41st minute. Modric got crocked after 32 minutes, and had to be replaced. That game was one of the very few missed this season by Spurs' latest hero Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who sat the game out on the bench, in preparation for the trip to Germany.
Nigerian striker Peter Odemwingie is the obvious danger man for West Brom. He has now scored 12 goals for them in his first Premier League season, three of which have come in the last four games. Odemwingie played for Nigeria in last year's World Cup. Intriguingly, Odemwingie has a Russian passport and spent four seasons playing for Lokomotiv Moscow. Midfielder Chris Brunt, who scored West Brom's goal in September, has the tendency to be a threat against us, and scored two penalties in the recent win against Liverpool. West Brom also have Paul Scharner, now sporting an orthodox hair-style. He scored Wigan's solitary goal against Spurs in the famous 9-1 match, and that was a blatant handball, missed by the officials!
As for Spurs, we are told that Gareth Bale has to be regarded as a doubt after being "taken out" on Wednesday night by Szczesny, but there are no other new injury worries. Regardless of the different opposition, or perhaps even because of this opposition, Spurs need to play with the same gusto and tempo as when at their best on Wednesday night. We keep saying it, but this is a game that Spurs simply must win to stay in the Champions League race. I'll say they will by 3-1.
