It was a chilly evening for this rearranged fixture which saw both these Academy sides' first match in this season's competition. A good sized crowd turned up for this game between two sides that are not doing well in their respective groups.

Spurs fielded their strongest line-up of the season with a number of second year scholars replacing the younger starters. Durojaiye came in alongside Sheriff at the back with Waller-Lassen dropping to right back and Francis-Angol coming in at left back. Dombaxe and Tapping started in the centre of midfield with Oyenuga on the right and Pritchard on the left. Kane came in to play as an extra central midfielder which left Lancaster up front as the lone striker. As in past cup matches Inglethorpe played a more defensive game which is not our strong point.

Barnsley looked a well-drilled unit and wanted to show that they were a match for their Premier League visitors. They were quick out of the blocks and closed down the Spurs players in all parts of the pitch. Spurs rely on a quick passing game but this also needs the players to know each other and due to the many changes this was lacking. The Barnsley strikers Rose and Noble-Lazarus harried the Spurs defence all evening which prevented them from starting attacks and caused mistakes. From an early attack the ball was picked up by Riley on the right who put in a cross that was met by Rose in mid-air. His scissor-kick volley flew into the net with Archer flat footed. The early goal lifted the home side and stunned the visitors.

Spurs responded well when Kane threaded a lovely diagonal ball to Oyenuga who hurried his shot which went wide. Archer saved from Rose and Clarke fired wide before Kane played in Oyenuga again. This time the keeper saved. Noble-Lazarus fired across the goalmouth before Lancaster saw his effort deflected for a corner. Oyenuga popped up on the left to have a shot that was saved when it looked better to cross. Kane fired in a long range effort that the keeper could not hold but went for a corner. Clarke drew a save from Archer before getting a yellow card for a late tackle. Dombaxe was the next player in the ref's book in strange circumstances. Turner had made one tackle and as the ball broke he tackled Dombaxe putting his foot in catching the Spurs player's leg. Dombaxe had slid in to the ball with his studs showing as the Barnsley play came in from behind him. It looked as if the Barnsley player should have been booked.

Oyenuga drew another save from the keeper before Noble-Lazarus forced his way past Sheriff who then pulled him back to earn a booking. The free kick found its way to Scott on the left who fired over. In the last minute of the half Kane slipped Pritchard in on the left but the shot went over the bar. The keeper quickly sent the ball down field where Waller-Lassen collected only to be hassled by Noble-Lazarus into losing it. The Barnsley striker pulled the ball back from the line into the path of Clarke who struck it first time and it flew into the far corner of the net to increase their lead. There was still time for Oyenuga to lay the ball into Kane but Lidakevicius saved.

Neither side made any changes for the second half and Barnsley started strongly again. Noble-Lazarus saw his free kick from the right saved. They won a free kick on the left, which Clarke took and played it into the near post where Riley made a run, unchallenged, to flick a header over Archer to extend their lead. Barnsley eased off which allowed Tapping a shot from distance that the keeper saved well.

Inglethorpe made his first change by taking off Dombaxe for Hawkins. Tapping had another effort which flew over and Oyenuga fired wide. Kilburn fired over from a corner before Hawkins drove wide. Inglethorpe took off Lancaster and sent on Barthram to take over the right back spot with Waller-Lassen moving to the left side of midfield as Oyenuga went upfront. The side looked a bit better with the two full backs pushing forward giving more width. Tapping forced Lidakevicius to concede a corner from which Kane smashed the ball against the near post when a more subtle strike may have been better.

Archer saved from Clarke at the expense of a corner before Spurs won a penalty. Barthram made a run around the back, to which the home side reacted late. Clarke and Lidakevicius failed to cut out the ball and Barthram was through to run onto it until the keeper tripped him up. Kane stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to score. Spurs began to get on top as they sensed a chance but Barnsley kept pulling more bodies back to help. Yun caught Sheriff from behind with his studs showing with a bad challenge. The ref only showed the player a yellow card but the Barnsley coach subbed him straight away as Sheriff had to come off and be replaced by Stewart. Spurs kept pushing but the home side defended well only allowing a shot by Oyenuga that was over the bar before the final whistle.

It was a disappointing performance from Spurs considering the quality of the players they brought in. Only Kane showed the sort of form we expected. It maybe upset the balance of the side making so many changes but playing without real width has to have had an effect. So much of Spurs play over the last few seasons have been built on good wingplay. The physical nature of Barnsley is not new and should not be used as a reason for losing. Spurs only began to look good when Oyenuga moved up and the full backs gave the side width.

The Academy now breaks up for the Christmas break with the next game being away to Coventry City on the 8th January.
