Spurs chasing fifth place (in the all-time Premier League table)

Spurs are chasing Aston Villa for fifth place in the all-time Premier League table. If Spurs managed two wins and Villa were to lose their last two games, then Spurs could overhaul their fellow Premier League ever-presents this season. Villa currently have 1088 points from 770 games, and Spurs have 1082. There is a big gap between fourth (Liverpool) and fifth places, whilst Everton currently languish 52 points below Spurs.

It says something about Harry Redknapp's success when one points out that our overall Premier League average points return is 1.41. Under Harry, that return has been 1.71 points per game, and he has got us into the top six for three years in succession. That hasn't happened since the sixties.

It's quite an under-statement to say that it has not been a good time to be a Villa fan. Those fans were not happy when Alex McLeish was appointed, after he had led neighbours Birmingham to relegation last season, and they still fear he might manage the same fate for the "Villans" this term. That's unlikely, in my opinion. 37 points will probably be enough unless both Bolton and QPR manage 4 points from their concluding games. Bolton could do it (home to West Brom and away to Stoke), but QPR have Stoke at home, then face a trip to title-chasing Man City on the last day. Sunderland remain the only team this season to even take one Premier League point away from The Etihad.

One more point for Villa would probably make absolutely certain of survival, and for that reason, I suspect we will face a defensive approach on Sunday. That does not augur well for Spurs desire to play attacking, stylish football, but then it didn't stop us from beating a cautious Villa in the home game this season. (Spurs 2 Villa 0 - 21st November, 2011). In that win, Adebayor scored two goals and we climbed into third place, where we stayed until last month. If Arsenal slip up, and we win both remaining games, we would re-claim that precious third place and be able to even relax over Chelsea's trip to Munich for the Champions League final.

Just this week, some Villa fans have paid to take out an advert on the back page of the local newspaper, seeking McLeish to be sacked. That's unlikely to happen before the end of the season, and in any event with Randy Lerner being as frugal as his predecessor Doug Ellis, it seems that Villa are faced with mediocrity for some time to come.

Villa's current form is not good. It's 9 games since they managed a win, and they have had only two league wins this calendar year. (Wolves (A) and Fulham (H) were the victims) Villa's miserable season was compounded by early exits in the Cup competitions. Their 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on New Year's Eve was a clear high spot of the season, but a mystery to all.

Another event this week, when three players mis-behaved outside a night spot after the end of season awards dinner has led to more undesired publicity. The three players were defender James Collins, and midfielders Chris Herd and Fabian Delph. They have all showed contrition, and we are told they have been disciplined. Collins and Herd may still be required to play, as they have been regulars.

Villa, but most importantly the player himself, suffered a severe blow when Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with Leukaemia at the end of March, and of course Spurs Odyssey wishes him the very best, and a successful recovery.

Former Spur Darren Bent remains Villa's top goalscorer, despite having been absent since late February with an ankle injury. Bent may make it back in time for England's Euro 2012 campaign, but not for the end of Villa's season. Goals have been hard to come by for Villa, and they will rely upon Gabriel Agbonlahor to do it for them tomorrow. He follows Bent with 5 goals, and Villa's next two highest scorers are absentees. They are Petrov (4), and another former Spur, Robbie Keane, who scored three goals in 6 league games whilst on loan earlier this year.

McLeish tried playing Alan Hutton ahead of Cuellar at right back against Gareth Bale in our home game, but Bale just went round both of them!

We've learnt this week that Kyle Walker has been playing with a broken toe, but that an injection has enabled him to carry on. He'll be there then tomorrow. Scott Parker is also in contention, but there is an argument for keeping the same team and attacking style of the team that has won their last two games. Sandro doesn't only defend well, but gets forward to great effect. He was our man of the match against Blackburn and played well at Bolton too.

There does seem to have been a resurgence of form at Tottenham, and I really fancy us to win tomorrow. I'm going for a 2-0 scoreline, which would mean we'd be in the race for third place on the last day of the season at White Hart Lane!

Did you know? - that Villa have not beaten Spurs for 4 years and 7 games since September 2008, and they've managed only two wins in the last 14 games?
