I'm gonna miss this game in hand!
Ever since we got established into our winning run, and best 19-game start to a league season since the famous double season, we have been talking about the "game in hand". Well, at long last, here it is, but you know, I think I'm gonna miss it! We do need Spurs to take maximum advantage of course and stretch our lead above fourth placed Chelsea and those trailing behind, including Arsenal, currently obsessed with the brief return of Terry Henry.
This is the game that had been sceduled for the first day of the season, put back because of the Tottenham riots. Our opponents are one of the 7 ever-present Premier League sides. Of those seven, Everton were the last team to reach the 1000 Premier League point barrier, and now have 1002 points. Spurs crossed that line last season and currently stand on 1,059 points, only 15 points behind Aston Villa, but a massive 560 behind Manchester United. It will take a long, long time to overhaul the reigning champions! Spurs have gained 19 points on Villa so far this season. We have conceded 999 goals, so the next will be the 1,000th, which would make us the first to concede that number in the Premier League, but then we've been there all the time, and we have had more than our fair share of bad seasons. In fact, if we win this game we will have exceeded our points tally in the dreaded 97-98 season. A win against Wolves as well would take us past the total points gained in 5 other seasons (93-94, 96-97, 98-99, 03-04, 07-08).
Everton can claim the finest pedigree in our league, having been one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888, and spending only 4 seasons outside the top flight in all their history. They are 9-time League Champions, 5-time FA Cup winners and European Cup-Winners Cup winners in in 1985. Their last trophy though was the FA Cup in 1995 (least said about our semi-final the better), so their ever-partisan fans have been starved of glory for 16 long years. Everton had a sniff of Champions League football in 2005, after finishing fourth, but unlike us, they failed to get past the qualifying round.
David Moyes has now been in charge at Goodison for very nearly 10 years, and when we met on the opening day of the 2002-03 season, it was Moyes' first game in charge against us. (Everton 2 Spurs 2 17th August, 2002) The Everton side then included 16 year old sensation Wayne Rooney, who made his Premier League debut, and at the time was the youngest ever to play in the Premier League. The only player involved in that game who survives in the two squads is full back Tony Hibbert, who has now played 238 league games for Everton, without hitting the net. Jamie Redknapp and Milenko Acimovic made their Spurs debuts, and the Spurs team featured the late Dean Richards. Matthew Etherington scored his first and only league goal for us that day. Hibbert is out with a groin/pelvis injury for this game though.
Moyes has done a terrific job at Everton, bearing in mind the limited financial resources that have been available to him. Like Spurs, the "Toffees" were handicapped by our first game postponement, and Everton lost 4 of their first 7 games, 6 of their first 10, 8 of their first 14, only recently finding a bit of form, although goals have been hard to come by. They have scored just 20 and conceded 22 in 19 games. Everton have failed to score more than one goal in a league game though in 7 games since 26th November, when they beat Bolton away. Last Wednesday, they lost at home to Bolton, despite goalkeeper Tim Howard's goal from a clearance. The gag of course is that Howard has scored more goals this year than Cahill, but in fact he's scored more this season than Cahill has for his club. The Australian International, now 32, has not scored a goal for Everton since 2th December, 2010. Cahill may miss this game with a groin strain.
Everton's major injury absence though is Phil Jagielka, confirmed out for 6 weeks with a knee ligament injury. The "Toffees" are still a tough nut to crack though, and they have their battlers such as Fellaini, and yes, even Phil Neville, not so long ago being spuriously linked with Tottenham. They have Louis Saha up front, although he hasn't scored much this season, and now they have re-signed Landon Donovan on loan from LA Galaxy. Left back Leighton Baines is as much of a threat as anybody this season though, with three league goals to his name, but all his goals have been from the penalty spot, including one against non-league Tamworth on Saturday.
Spurs have plenty of their own injury worries. Sandro and Gallas might not be out for as long as first feared, but they'll miss a few games yet. Ledley is also not as bad as some have suggested, but he does have a hamstring problem, and will not be fit for this game. Scott Parker is also very doubtful for Everton. The choices then for the two central defenders are Kaboul/Dawson/Bassong, with perhaps Livermore and Pienaar battling for the place next to Modric. Pienaar would relish the chance against his old team, but I'm guessing that Jake will get the nod.
As always an early goal could make all the difference to the nature of the game and the eventual result. Only one team (Chelsea) have scored three goals against Everton in the league this season. Can Spurs become the second? I suspect not, and will predict a 2-0 to go level on points at least with Manchester United.
