Starting a new season against United
Spurs have now completed a full "Premier League Season" of games against Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United. In our 38 games against the current and 12-time Premier League champions, we have managed just three wins, each at home, and the last of those came at the end of a season in which United had secured their title on May 19th 2001. (Spurs 3 Manchester United 1 - May 2001)). It's a good job we play 18 other teams, otherwise we would be relegation trouble!
The start of Spurs' new league season has been delayed due to the riots that started in Tottenham on 6th August, and which spread through to several parts of the country, including Manchester, like a disease. Thanks heavens we've got our football back now!
Whether Spurs can start a new league season, and a new set of games against United with an unprecedented win remains to be seen. It also remains highly unlikely, let's be honest. Spurs will travel to Old Trafford full of confidence, after the 5-0 demolition of Hearts, but we all know what a world of difference there is between the two teams in question. Despite the free-spending of their local rivals at the recently re-named Etihad stadium, United remain one of the big favourites for this season's title.
Sir Alex did most of his transfer business early in the summer, with the signatures of former Blackburn defender Phil Jones, and Aston Villa's winger Ashley Young. United have also spent heavily on goalkeeper David De Gea, but he has big, big shoes to fill with the retirement of Edwin van der Saar creating the vacancy. De Gea was subject to criticism last week when West Brom's Shane Long was allowed to equalise, before United eventually got a late winner for a 2-1 start to their season.
United have off-loaded both John O'Shea and Wes Brown to Sunderland, which they may have reason to rue, due to injuries to Rio Ferdinand and skipper Nemanja Vidic sustained last week at The Hawthornes. 19 year old Jones is likely to get his home debut, and first league start for his new team. Perhaps Spurs do have more of a chance against an unfamiliar United defence, who cannot call upon Rafael, who is out with a shoulder injury, and perhaps left back Evra, who has a knee problem.
Spurs have their own injury list though, and it is the only one currently longer than that of United. It seems that Palacios, Pienaar, Sandro, Gallas and Jenas are definite absentees, but as Tom Huddlestone made an appearance at Tynecastle, we should see him, hopefully alongside Luka Modric, despite the on-going will he or won't he go saga. Ledley King is described as doubtful for this match, and we've seen nothing of him during the pre-season.
Unlike United, and apart from the signing of Brad Friedel and two promising young players (Ceballos and Coulibaye), Spurs are acting late, as usual, and we are yet to see any confirmed news of high profile signings such as Adebayor or Diarra.
Ahead of their defence, United have plenty of choice and strength in depth, despite Paul Scholes' retirement. Vedran Corluka may be the right back choice for Spurs, as he has history of handling Ashley Young comfortably, but the Spurs defence will be tested hard by the presence of Rooney & Co.
Spurs looked very sharp on Thursday, and both Lennon and Bale should figure here, with Van der Vaart behind Harry Redknapp's chosen strike partner. Can Spurs gain a historic Premier League win? Wouldn't it be lovely? Dreams can come true. I am sure there will be goals in the game though, and I just hope that Spurs can get off the mark in their first game of the new league season.
