Time to win in "Toontown"!
I was talking to someone at the England Under 16s' game this week, who was at University in Newcastle. Guessing his age, I said "You must have been there around the time they last won a trophy!" I was correct, because my acquaintance had indeed been in town when Joe Harvey's Newcastle, captained by two-goal hero Bobby Moncur beat the Hungarian side Ujpest Dosza 3-0 at home in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, then 3-2 away, when Moncur again scored. That, dear reader, really was the last time Newcastle won a major trophy, although, despite the fact the competition was the fore-runner of the UEFA Cup, UEFA do not formally recognise Fairs Cup history as part of their records.
Every now and again, I like to remind Spurs readers of the fact that "The Magpies" last won a domestic trophy in 1955 (FA Cup), and last finished top of the football league pile as far back as 1926-27. Newcastle did finish top of the second tier 18 months ago, and back in 1992-93, when Kevin Keegan led them back to top tier football.
In fairness, Newcastle can say they have played Champions League football three times, against Spurs' solitary season last year. Under Keegan, they also finished runners-up in the Premier League two years running in the mid-nineties. These were the "I would love it days".
Former Spur Chris Hughton led "The Toon" back to the Premier League in the 2009-10 season, but was sacked in December last year and replaced by Alan Pardew. Andy Carroll was sold to Liverpool in January for an irresistible £35 million in January, and whilst Newcastle fans were promised that all that money would be spent on replacements that promise has yet to be fulfilled.
Newcastle did however make some quite astute summer signings. Those signings included 25 year old French International Yohan Cabaye from French Champions Lille, and West Ham's Demba Ba, who has hit goal-scoring form in his last two games. Joey Barton famously fell out with the club and has departed to QPR, but the Newcastle squad is quite large and has a low average age of just under 23 years. They might not have a marquee signing or big name up front, but they remain one of the four unbeaten sides in this season's Premier League competition. In addition to Ba, Leon Best has been chipping in with three Premier League goals, only one behind Demba Ba.
In 9 competitive games to date, Newcastle have won 6 and drawn 3 of those games, and they are through to the 4th Round of the Carling Cup. Morale must be really high, and that counts for a lot, in addition to the traditional large home crowd, although gates have yet to reach the 52,000 capacity so far this season. Spurs will want to beware of Ivory Coast midfielder Cheik Tiote, who in 33 league games for Newcastle, has acquired no less than 16 yellow cards. He's only on two so far this season, but both were against London clubs (Arsenal and QPR).
This will be a meeting of two form sides, although it could be argued Newcastle have yet to meet a top team. Spurs are on a run of four consecutive wins, seeking for only the fourth time in their Premier League history to win five, which would give them a chance of a new record next week. They have to take one step at a time though, and Newcastle has never been an easy place to go, especially for Spurs, who havbe not won a league game here since Timmy Atouba's goal in August 2004 (Newcastle 0 Spurs 1 - 21st August, 2004).
Last season, we won at home and drew away, with Aaron Lennon scoring in both games. Lennon's goal at St James' Park came in added time. (Newcastle 1 Spurs 1 - 22nd January, 2011).
Unfortunately, Lennon is one of Spurs' injury doubts along with Sandro and Adebayor, all of whom are described as "50-50" to be fit for selection. Niko Kranjcar and Vedran Corluka came back from International duty with injuries, but in fainess, neither would have been first choice anyway. Significantly, Ledley King was not mentioned, which suggests that he will be fit enough to play his fifth consecutive league game of the season. All eight of Ledley's last Premier League games have been wins, so we hope for the ninth in that run, and Spurs' fifth consecutive league win this season. If Adebayor doesn't make it, then we are probably going to see Van der vaart behind Defoe, whereas if Adebayor is fit, then Harry has the dilemma he faced two weeks ago against Arsenal.
I have submitted my predictions for the week-end, and I am going for a 2-0 win to Spurs!
