Come on Spurs, "Let's be 'aving you!"

It's one of those strange co-incidences that keep cropping up in football, but the last time we met Norwich was on Boxing Day 2004 at Carrow Road! (This game was originally scehduled for Boxing Day, but has been moved for Sky TV)On that last occasion (Norwich v Spurs 26.12.04) we won 2-0 with goals by Robbie Keane and Michael Brown. Norwich's side included goalkeeper Rob Green, defender Gary Doherty, who had left Spurs at the beginning of that season, and Arsenal loanee David Bentley. Spurs secured a fifth successive league win, to reach their highest position since October that season (7th). Keane and Kanoute were in top scoring form in that spell.

Rob Green had played a blinder in the home match that season (Spurs v Norwich 12.09.04), frustrating Spurs with a clean sheet and a remarkable performance. Doherty had played as a striker in the game at The Lane, but spent most of his Norwich career at the back. When Norwich got promoted from League One to the Championship, Doherty went to Charlton, but this season he has made just three substitute appearances at that level.

That 2004-05 season was Norwich's only time in the Premier League in the 21st Century, but they had graced the top flight in the nineties, between 1992 and 1995, when they finished third one season; gained entry to the UEFA Cup, and defeated the mighty Bayern Munich away in October 1993. The Bayern side that day included Christian Ziege at left back, and they were captained by Lothar Matthaus.

Norwich were then managed by former Watford and Colchester goalkeeper Mike Walker - father of our own Ian. The Norwich keeper against Bayern was Bryan Gunn, who had a brief spell as manager of Norwich in 2009. His reign dramatically ended with the opening day 7-1 home defeat by Paul Lambert's Colchester in August 2009. Lambert took over as Norwich manager, and hasn't looked back, winning back to back promotions. Norwich became the first team since Manchester City (1999-2001) to achieve such a feat in England, regarding promotion to the Premier League.

Of course, Delia Smith's Norwich are not likely to emulate the cash-rich Manchester City, but they have made a good start to their return to the Premier League. The "Canaries" have won 5 league games, four of which have come against those who would be regarded as part of their "mini-league" within the Premier League. Two weeks ago, their best win was arguably against Newcastle, who made such a good start to the season, but who have fallen away once they met too many of the top sides, and once injuries started to kick in.

Delia has won some fame with her semi-inebriated urge to the Norwich fans "Let's be having you!" at half-time in a game five years ago, as well as her culinary skills that I believe are usually on show at Carrow Road in the hospitality lounges. Personally, I have all the time in the world for this woman who is passionate about her football club, and I am proud to have in my possession her Christmas 2010 book, duly inscribed with the famour quote!

Norwich's worst defeats this season have come at Chelsea, Old Trafford, and The Etihad Stadium, but they have consistently put in plenty of effort and not a little skill, with Grant Holt and Steve Morison providing 7 and 6 league goals respectively. Morison's rise to the Premier League has been quite astounding. He spent three seasons at Stevenage (when they were a non-pleague team), before moving to Millwall, before he was snapped up by Lambert.

The Norwich team will battle hard in front of their vociferous fans in a sell-out crowd. Spurs loanee Kyle Naughton will be absent on two counts. Firstly, he is a Spurs loanee. Secondly he is able to serve a suspension because he got his fifth booking in his last game. That suits Norwich down to the ground. Spurs have one or two too many injury problems, and we must hope that Younes Kaboul can play in this game, because I suspect that Ledley will not make this one. Apparently Rafa van der Vaart may be available as he did not suffer a hamstring tear against Chelsea, after all. Spurs are going to need their squad over the continuing Christmas and New Year period, and they are going to have to work hard to win this game tomorrow.

I'm going for a 2-0 win for Spurs. The referee for this game will be Michael Oliver, who we last saw against Charlton in the FA Cup last January.
