Time to nail home the advantage!
On the week-end that Spurs beat West Brom at The Hawthorns in November (West Brom 1 Spurs 3 - 26th November, 2011), Arsenal were dropping two points at home against Fulham, Man Utd dropped two at home to Newcastle, and Man City dropped two at Anfield. Now we are playing the reverse of those fixtures, and Arsenal have already lost at Fulham, failing to at least draw level on points with Spurs. We have to wait for the reesults sof the Manchester teams, but we go into this match established in third place, with real intentions not only to nail home that position, but perhaps to gain another point or two against the two teams above us.
It's great, isn't it, not only to be talking about our beloved team in real terms of being contenders for an automatic qualification to the group stage of next season's Champions League, but also as title contenders. We are not such an outside chance as some might say either.
The joy of watching Arsene Wenger's inability to find a pocket in his jacket, and his inability to be a gracious loser would be more than a little dissipated, if Harry Redknapp's team failed to secure all three points in tonight's game. With all the surprise results of the last week or so, Spurs will surely be aware of the ability of any team in this league to produce a shock. Bearing in mind Roy Hodgson's team's draw at White Hart Lane last April,(Spurs 2 West Brom 2 - 23rd April, 2011) we should know the risk of an unsatisfactory result.
Roy Hodgson has had a frustrating head-banging time over the Christmas period. His team have lost 6 of their 10 home games, and only scored 7 home league goals. Yet, they managed to secure a draw last week against league leaders Manchester City. Away from home, West Brom have fared better, winning 4 of 9 games, scoring 12 goals in the process. Their wins have been achieved against Norwich, Villa, Blackburn and Newcastle. The last two away games have been won.
West Brom are just 7 points clear of safety, and survival is the main objective at this time. Like every team in the league now, West Brom will treat Spurs as one they would really love to beat. Such is the fate of genuine top teams in the Premier League. However, Hodgson will have injury worries, as Shane Long is doubtful with back trouble, and skipper Chris Brunt hobbled off on Sunday against Everton. Defender Jonas Olsson is also likely to miss this game. On top of it all, "The Baggies" have had less recovery time than have Spurs after the week-end games.
The word on Spurs Odyssey is that Ledley King, Scott Parker and Aaron Lennon are all in the squad. How likely each of them are to play we will find out later, but Sandro would be a great deputy for Parker, and Spurs already have strength in defence to cover for Ledley if necessary. I suspect that Lennon is the least likely of the three to make the cut, so to speak.
I'm going for another 3-1 win for Spurs, but I'm hoping for even better!
