Wow! A three o'clock Saturday game!
It's a three o'clock Saturday kick-off! These are a rarity for Spurs at present, and we are not scheduled to have such a game at White Hart Lane before December 3rd against Bolton! There is time for that to change too, as the TV schedulers have not ravaged the season beyond November as yet. In fact, after Wigan, our next Saturday game will be on 26th November at West Bromwich Albion.
It seems amazing really to think that this will be our seventh visit to the DW Stadium (formerly named the JJB), although it is hard to regard "The Latics" as an established Premier League side, when in four of their six seasons at the top so far they have had to battle against relegation. The fact they have succeeded is of course a great credit to them, although last season survival was only achieved on the last day of the season with a 1-0 win at Stoke, thanks to a goal by Hugo Rodallega.
Rodallega has been such an important goal-scorer to Wigan, but they will have to do without him for at least three months now, as he sustained a nasty knee in jury against Everton in last week's 3-1 defeat. Rodallega's absence will place a lot of responsibility upon former Chelsea youngster, 22 year old Franco Di Santo, who has scored 3 of Wigan's 4 league goals to date. The other was a Ben Watson penalty on Day One against Norwich.
Last year Wigan had the benefit of Manchester United's Tom Cleverley in midfield, but he's been retained (and used before injury) by Sir Alex Ferguson. Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has signed up another Chelsea player on loan - Patrick Van Aanholt - who plays at left back. Wigan also signed Bolton's Al-Habsi, who was on loan last season and is their first choice goalkeeper. other new arrivals include former Wolves midfielder David Jones, and strikers Albert Crusat, Nouha Dicko, and Shaun Maloney, any of whom might replace Rodallegga. They also have Victor Moses, still only 20, who was signed two years ago from Crystal Palace.
Although we've only lost twice in 12 games to Wigan, we haven't always done as well as we would like. Last season is a perfect example, where we conceded 4 league points to Wigan, who beat us at White Hart Lane last August to exact revenge for the previous season's 9-1. Our draw at Wigan in April (Wigan 0 Spurs 0 - 2nd April, 2011)came towards the end of a disappointing period for Spurs, where we failed to win a league game in 4 attempts, losing to relegated Blackpool, drawing at home to relegated West Ham, and drawing at Molineux. Wigan were bottom of the table when we played, and our next game was the 4-0 defeat in The Bernabeu.
Spurs have been playing young players in the Europa League and Carling Cup games, and have clearly indicated that the main aim is to regain a place at the top table of next year's Champions' League. That means that we must be ruthless in games such as this one, and we need to see a performance on the same level as given against Liverpool last week. Wigan may be cautious and pack the midfield, but a midfield including Van der Vaart, Modric, Parker and Bale should be able to unpick their opponents. Lennon may not yet be available, so Van der Vaart may play behind Defoe and Adebayor.
Spurs do have the strength in depth, and it is up to them to demonstrate it this week-end. I do feel confident about our chances and fancy we might win this one by two clear goals. I'll go for a 3-1.
