Could this be our goodbye to Wigan?
It's not that I'm counting chickens, or writing Wigan off, especially with 16 games still to play in this season's Premier League, but the fact has to be faced that this could be our goodbye to "The Latics", who have spent 7 years in the Premier league to date. Bearing in mind the fact that Wigan is really a Rugby League town, and their really quite abysmal recent form, it's no surprise that the DW stadium is never full for football, not even when top of the league Manchester City recently visited, when the crowd was no more than 16,026. There won't be many travelling fans tonight either.
Wigan are rock bottom of the league, three points behind Wolves and Blackburn now, and four points from safety. They are without a win in 9 games, and that was at West Brom on December 10th. In fact they have managed only three wins all season. Wigan fans have not seen their side win at home since August 27th, when QPR were the victims. The only other win was at Sunderland in late November, against their former manager Steve Bruce, who subsequently got the sack.
Roberto Martinez's side got knocked out of both cup competitions at the first hurdle, and both those defeats were to lower league opposition. They lost to Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup 2nd round and at Swindon in the FA Cup 3rd round. Mind you, Martin Jol gave us our shortest ever season in 2005-06, when we also got knocked out of both cups by lower league opposition. We did challenge for the Champions League and finished fifth, thanks to "Lasagne-gate" though.
With a day to go in the transfer window, there have been no dramatic swoops by Dave Whelan, whose by-word has been to have faith in his manager, and operate well within budgetary constraints. Both those policies are commendable, and both Mr Whelan and his manager are "nice guys". There is likely to be some action today by Spurs though, and already the word is that Vedran Corluka is going on loan to Bayer Leverkusen, whilst Adam Smith is being recalled at short notice from his loan at MK Dons.
If this is to be our goodbye, then we'd best have a glance at some good memories of Wigan. Firstly, managed by Paul Jewell, Wigan surprised us all in their first season, when they won 7 of their first 10 games, and rose to second in the league table, behind only Chelsea, who had made a great start, and were the eventual champions. Wigan finished tenth, but also got to the League Cup Final, thanks to beating Arsenal in the semi-final. I don't think that things ever got any better for Wigan after that.
Funnily enough, Arsenal, then Spurs, ended Wigan's great start in 2005 with consecutive victories at what was then the JJB Stadium, but is now the DW Stadium. The Spurs win was achieved thanks to goals by Robbie Keane and Edgar Davids (Wigan 1 Spurs 2 - 26th November, 2005). Then of course we have to mention Spurs' record Premier League win in November 2009, when we won by a spectacular 9-1, largely thanks to a five-goal haul by Jermain Defoe. (Spurs 9 Wigan 1 - full report).
Wigan have had their successes of course, not least when they surprisingly beat us in their last visit in August 2010 (Spurs 0 Wigan 1 - 28th August 2010). Until our last game at The Etihad, that Wigan defeat was the last defeat in the Premier League in which Ledley King played. Hopefully, he'll be fit tonight to get a little vengeance. A Harry Redknapp experiment to play Ledley in midfield (where he did play earlier in his career) failed in our only defeat at Wigan in January 2009, when we fell foul of a late winner by Wigan's full back Maynor Figueroa. Columbian striker Hugo Rodallega, scored the winner in that last game at White Hart Lane. Both these players still figure prominently in Martinez's squad, although Rodallega has only managed two league goals in 10 starts to date.
Goals have been hard to come by for Wigan this term. They've only managed 19 in 22 games so far. That's the poorest record in the Premier League. The Spaniard Jordi Gomez has scored 4, 2 of which have been from the penalty spot, and former Chelsea Junior Franco Di Santo has also scored 4 league goals.
Gareth Bale trained yesterday, and I suspect will be available for this game. Sandro also trained but is not yet match fit. Both Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon limped out of training, so they may be absent. Spurs will still have plenty in the locker to send Wigan home pointless, and I feel that the team will be fired up to perform at home after that defeat at Man City, and a poor team performance at Watford on Friday night. I'm going to stick my neck out and predict a 4-0 win!
