Wolves come a-hunting
Arguably, our season started for real when we beat Wolves 2-0 at Molineux on 10th September (Wolves 0 Spurs 2 - 10th September, 2011). When that game was played, Wolves were unbeaten in their first three games, on 7 points and hopeful for their season ahead. We had lost our first two games to the Manchester sides which are now the only barrier between Spurs and the top of the table. How things have changed!
Wolves lost their form, and their way, and that defeat to us was the first of five consecutive losses that took them on a slide down the league table. Their form is almost diametrically opposite our own in the last 17/18 games. (17 for them, 18 for us). Wolves have won just two of those games, against Wigan and Sunderland, whereas we have lost just one of our last 18 games. That result was at Stoke too, where referee Chris Foy came in for a lot of stick.
Now Mick McCarthy's team are immersed in the usual battle for Premier League survival, just one point above the bottom three. A point garnered from this fixture would be a great result for them, and Spurs can expect another defensive approach. Mind you, it's not so long ago tthat we suffered at Wolves hands (or should I say feet). I am minded to think of that scene from "Frozen Planet" where a pair of desperate and hungry wolves managed to pick off one of a herd of Bison. The little guy does win sometimes.
Spurs haven't played a league game at home to Wolves in January since 20th January, 1951, which was a Championship winning year. If you are looking for another omen, Spurs had lost the first game of that season by a large score - 4-1 to Blackpool. Wolves were the form side when they came to The Lane for that January fixture, having been unbeaten since 11th November. Spurs were the victors, 2-1 with goals by McClennan and Walters, 66,796 people watched the game. Spurs went to the top of the league, and ultimately stayed there. The Spurs team that day was Ditchburn; Ramsey, Willis, Nicholson, Clarke, Burgess, Walters, Murphy, McClennan, Baily and Medley. Wolves included the legendary Billy Wright, but both he and Bill Nicholson had off days, with Murphy taking the limelight for the home side.
Later in the fifties we did have an away league game in January, and we have also played a couple of home Cup games against Wolves in January.
Wolves skipper Roger Johnson hobbled off in last week's FA Cup game at St. Andrews, and may be a doubt for this game. Former Spurs favourite Jamie O'Hara has been out with a groin injury since last month, and may be getting close to match fitness. Defender Zubar is out for another three weeks with a knee injury. Good news for Wolves is the availability of midfielder Nenad Milijas, who has had to serve a three match ban after failing to appeal his sending off for a red card for an alleged dangerous tackle on Mikel Arteta, in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal on 27th December. Spurs will be keeping a close eye on top scorer Steven Fletcher, who has scored 8 of Wolves 22 league goals.
With Karl Henry in the midfield for the visitors, that area will be more physical than against Everton, I feel, and the presence of Scott Parker would be a blessing. However, Jake Livermore gave an assured performance, and Harry would have reason to be confident in the same side that beat Everton, with a full week's rest to come before the showdown at The Etihad against Man City.
An unchanged team would mean Jermain Defoe having to sit it out on the bench again. His chance will come in the Man City game, for which Adebayor will not be available. Adebayor scored on his Spurs debut at Molineux, and ought to be determined to score one or two this Saturday! I'm going for a more convincing win for Spurs than of late - 3-0.
