It was a cool evening for this hastily arranged friendly. Kingstonians were surprised by the large crowd that arrived for this match and had to delay the kick-off to allow everyone to get in. The large crowd also meant that I was unable to get a programme or teamsheet so have had to find out the teams by other means.
Spurs lined up with Miles in goal behind Hall and Veljkovic with Byrne at right back and Stewart on the left. Gomelt and Bentaleb started in the centre of midfield with Pritchard on the right flank and Ceballos on the left with Mason behind Bostock up front. Sherwood had Ferdinand and Ramsey with him on the bench.
Spurs kicked off the first half attacking the south end but took a little while to settle, which allowed the home side to create early chances. Lodge got past Byrne on the left and saw his shot pushed onto the near post by Miles for a corner. Miles soon had to tip Pattison's free kick around the same post. Miles then blocked a close range effort by Mullen with his legs, all within the opening ten minutes.
Spurs began to settle into a passing game, working the ball across the pitch as they moved it upfield. The approach play was good but they had problems getting through the back line.
Ceballos fired over from range before drawing a save with another effort. Pritchard took a short corner, getting the return from Mason, before firing a wicked drive that Tolfrey parried to safety. Mason drove wide and Pritchard did the same.
Small headed home a cross which was ruled out for offside. Goode beat Stewart in the corner and crossed for Mullen at the near post. Miles was quick out to block his effort with his legs.
When Bostock's drive was blocked, the ball dropped at the far post, where Ceballos got to it just before Tolfrey but turned it wide. When Byrne crossed from the right, two defenders collided leaving Mason with a chance. As he faced the keeper the referee stopped the game to let the Kingstonian players get treatment. Murphy had to be replaced shortly after when he could not continue.
Archer replaced Miles for the second half while the home side made four changes. Spurs continued to play the ball around, but began to play balls over the top to turn the defence, which kept a high line.
After getting caught a couple of times, Mason latched onto a through ball, and with Bostock drawing defenders, Ryan advanced into the area beating the keeper with a low finish.
McCollin fired wide before Sherwood made his changes. Ekong replaced Veljkovic at the back; Munns replaced Ceballos on the left, and Barthram came on for Pritchard going to right back, with Byrne moving to right midfield. The formation changed as well moving to 4-3-3. Munns and Byrne pushed up with Barthram and Stewart overlapping.
Bostock beat the off-side trap but fired wide. Mason hit a long cross-field ball to Barthram who came inside and drew a save from the keeper. Mason played in Stewart on the left and when the ball went to the far post, Barthram arrived to slot home for 2-0.
Bostock fired over, before Tait sent McCollin through on the keeper. Archer came out to save at his feet only for the referee to award a penalty. McCollin scored from the spot giving the home side a boost. McCollin fired wide as Spurs looked to close the game out. Byrne went off after being caught by a tackle but it did not disrupt the control the visitors had on the game.
This was a good display for a first game back in training. Kingstonians had no answer once Spurs changed to 4-3-3. Spurs took control, passing the ball quickly around the field. The three up front drew in the defenders allowing the two full-backs to get round the back.
