It was a cool afternoon with a warm sun that got cold as the game went into the evening. The pitch was an old community stadium that has been incorporated into the Paris Saint Germain training complex. It was a tricky journey to get to from the centre of Paris, but my guide Peter Berlin, who lives in the city, got me there in plenty of time.
Spurs lined up with Vigouroux behind Ball and Stewart at the back with Barthram on the right and Ward on the left. Veljkovic anchored the midfield with Winks and Bentaleb while Coulthirst led the line with McEvoy on his right and Lameiras on his left.
Spurs defended the north end were soon put under pressure by a strong physical French side who were quick and strong in the tackle unsettling the visitors. Twice Ward made bad tackles that saw him go into the ref's book very early. The shaky Spurs defence kept the home side at bay for over ten minutes before they had their first chance which Sainrimat put wide.
Coulthirst saw his effort from a corner blocked before Vigouroux saved a couple of shots by Sainrimat. Mbaka drove wide before Spurs took the lead. McEvoy played in Coulthirst down the left and the striker worked an opening to drive in his shot across the keeper into the net.
Lacazette was booked for a high challenge on Bentaleb. Ongenda drove wide and Coman turned the ball wide after he had slipped in the area.
The second half started with the home side again putting pressure on Spurs with Coman firing wide. Sainrimat saw his low drive cleared off the line by Lameiras following a corner and Vigouroux saved from Ongenda.
Spurs made a double substitution with Akindayini coming on for Lameiras and Michael-Percil replacing McEvoy. The pressure finally told when a cross from the left found Mbaka on the right who drove low into the far corner.
Vigouroux saved from Sainrimat before Michael-Percil crossed for Akindayini to draw a save from Matenan. Vigouroux saved from Sainrimat’s header before Spurs made more changes bringing on Dombaxe for the limping Bentaleb and Lesniack for Winks.
Paris sub NkombNkomb drew a save soon after he came on as the home side kept the pressure on. Conte was booked as Spurs tried to break which also saw Veljkovic injuried and replaced by McEneff. The home side kept trying and Chemin had an effort saved and another blocked while Coman fired over.
At full time I was told that there would not be extra time, and that we would go straight to penalties. I was caught out when the teams lined up again to kick off. Chemin drove wide and Bambock fired over before Akindayini saw his effort saved from a McEneff pass in the first period of extra time.
Early in the second period Dombaxe was shown a yellow for a late tackle on Coman who was now looking for free kicks all the time complaining bitterly on one occasion when he did not get one.
Vigouroux saved from Chemin and Ball saw an attempted block spin up and drop over the bar. Coman saw his free kick saved and then missed a chance at the far post from a corner. The last chance fell to Spurs when Dombaxe played in Coulthirst for a shot he put wide and it went then went to penalties.
Dombaxe stepped up first for Spurs and sent the keeper the wrong way scoring low to the right. Coman missed for Paris hitting the ball over. Stewart took the second scoring in the left corner while Bambock drove down the middle for 1-2. Our third penalty was taken by Ball, who drove it straight only for it to hit the keepers legs as he went left. Chemin scored his for 2-2.
Ward stepped up for the fourth and scored beating the keeper to his right while Conte scored in the same place for Paris to stay level at 3-3. Last to step up was Coulthirst who kept his nerve placing his kick to the right. The Paris captain stepped up and also put his kick to the right but Vigouroux guessed correctly and saved inside the post to see Spurs through to the next round.
This was a very difficult game for Spurs and the goalkeeper did a great job of keeping them in it. Ball had a good game at the back hardly missing a header and Coulthirst kept running all night.
