It was a chilly evening for this quarter-final clash between two attacking sides at Leyton Orient's ground which had been heavily sanded in parts. A large patch was just in front of the dug-outs and affected the play on that side. The visitors, formerly known as Sporting Lisbon, were one of the best footballing sides in last season's competition and beat Liverpool 4-0 in the last round. The numbers on the Sporting shirts were hard to see properly so I apologise if I make any mistakes in identifying players.

Spurs lined up with the hero of the last round, Vigouroux, in goal behind Ball and Veljkovic with Barthram at right back and Stewart on the left. Dombaxe anchored the midfield with Bentaleb and Lameiras. Coulthirst led the line with Oduwa on his right and McEvoy on his left.

Spurs kicked off attacking the north end but found the visitors a tough side to play. They found themselves behind when a ball was played into the area and Coelho scored with an overhead kick that caught Vigouroux off his line.

Spurs quickly drew level when McEvoy crossed from the left and the ball hit Lameiras before it reached Oduwa at the far post. The wide man took a couple of touches to turn inside and then hit a rising shot into the far side of the goal.

Spurs were not winning the midfield battle and Esgaio fired wide before Bentaleb drove wide from a pass from McEvoy. Rosa got through to fire over. McEvoy got down the left but his low drive was saved at the near post. Sporting regained the lead when Esgaio got down the right and put in a low cross. Coelho got between two defenders to score.

Dombaxe sent Oduwa away down the right before cutting inside to fire in an effort that flew over. Vigouroux came out to collect a long ball which fell short of the area forcing the keeper to try and head it clear. Rosa picked it up but could only hit it wide of the un-guarded net. Vigouroux saved from Palhinha before another mistake almost cost Spurs a goal. The keeper tried to bounce the ball on the edge of the area but Coelho knocked it away and passed to Rosa who hit it over the bar with the keeper standed. McEvoy got down the left again and drove for the near post instead of pulling the ball back for Coulthirst to see Meira save. Coelho fouled Barthram from behind to get booked by the referee.

There were no changes for the start of the second half but Coelho was replaced very early by Guedes. Ball was booked for a foul on Medeiros as he was going down the right wing. Palhinha fired over and Rosa drove wide as the visitors pushed forward. A ball over the top saw Ball chasing Rosa with Vigouroux coming out quickly and when the three met, the referee gave a penalty to Sporting. Riquicho curled it to the right as Vigouroux went the other way to give the visitors a two goal lead.

Lesniak replaced Lameiras in midfield for the restart and he began to play passes from the centre for the front line. Palhinha chased a ball over the top but Virouroux was out quickly to save at his feet. Spurs made a double change with Onomah replacing Bentaleb in midfield and Akindayini came on for Oduwa up front.

After Palhinha fired over, McEvoy got down the right and crossed for Coulthirst to head wide at the far post. Stojanovic came on for Sporting and his first touch was to head a cross wide. Coulthirst had a chance saved before he was fouled driving into the area from the left by Pigueiredo for a penalty. The penalty was taken by Dombaxe who sent the keeper the wrong way, scoring low to the right.

Spurs pushed for the equaliser with Barthram getting forward for an effort that was saved before Spurs made their last changes. Michael-Percil replaced McEvoy on the right and McQueen came on for Stewart in attack with Barthram moving to the left side. Sporting tried to run the clock down making a double substitution very slowly but with Spurs pushing forward in the dying minutes they got their equaliser. Barthram's cross from the left was dropped by Meira, under pressure from Coulthirst, and Michael-Percil knocked in the loose ball. The referee blew for time a minute later to send the tie into extra time.

Spurs defended the south end during the first period with both sides going for it. Unfortunately for Spurs Guedes scored with a shot from the edge of the area that went through Vigouroux's hands. Dombaxe was booked after pressure around the visitors' goal possibly for a foot up early in the move. Sporting increased their lead with a goal out of the blue. Fokobo hit an effort from inside the centre circle that bent into the left side of the goal with Vigouroux reacting late. With a two goal lead the visitors sat back allowing Spurs to come onto them. Meira saved from Akindayini before the break.

Coulthirst saw his effort saved early in the second period with Fokobo driving wide. When the referee called back play for a Sporting free kick, one of their coaches was sent to the stands for abuse. Sporting hit Spurs on the break with Vigouroux saving from Guedes for a corner and Stojanovic driving wide.McQueen saw his drive deflected for a corner and Lesniak was wide with his effort. As the game entered its final minutes Coulthirst was caught in the area and had to have treatment before returning. Ie was booked for deliberate handball at a throw-in before Coulthirst went down again and the referee blew for time as he was carried off on a stretcher.

It would be easy to say we lost because of individual errors, but Sporting were a strong team that had physical strength at the back. This was allied to a quick passing attacking game as well. Spurs did not perform on the night as well as they can do with Vigouroux not being as commanding in goal as he showed in the last round. Spurs did well to take the game into extra time befor bowing out at the same stage as last time.
