Put the baby down, and get on that wing, Gareth!
Spurs return to the St. Mary's Stadium, Southampton for the first time since March 2005, and Gareth Bale returns to his former club for the first time in a playing capacity. Bale must surely play after his two match paternity leave, hence my invocation above! Along with every other Spurs fan, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Gareth and his partner, but boy have we missed what he can do at any instant in a football match!
Gareth Bale made his first team debut for Southampton on 17th April, 2006 at the age of 16, at home to Millwall in a Championship match, which Southampton won 2-0. At the end of May 2006, Gareth became the youngest player ever to play for Wales when he came on as a substitute after 54 minutes in a 2-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago. Gareth was well and truly on the map and played a full part in Southampton's next season. He scored his first senior club goal on 6th August, 2006 in a 2-2 draw at Pride Park, and scored 5 league goals in 38 league matches that season.
It wasn't long of course, before Daniel Levy and Spurs came a-hunting, paying an initial £5 million fee, that originally could have risen to £10 million. They paid a settlement of £2 million in 2007, as "Saints" were in financial need. Spurs got a bargain.
Southampton will be proud on the one hand to have been the nursery for a player who is now World renowned, along with England Internationals Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who ply their trade at the wrong end of Seven Sisters Road. On the other hand they will want to establish themselves as a big enough club to actually keep hold of such talent.
They've suffered a full seven years in the doldrums, but have won their way back to the top tier with consecutive promotions from League One and The Championship under manager Nigel Adkins, who they appointed from Scunthorpe after Alan Pardew was sacked before he left for Newcastle. "Wupert" Lowe is no longer the Chairman of the club which was sold three years ago, and is now chaired by Mr. Nicola Cortese.
Spurs have an unhappy record at Southampton in recent years. They have yet to score a goal, let alone win a game at the St. Mary's Stadium, which was opened in 2001. The last time we scored and won a game was at The Dell in November, 1999 (Southampton 0 Spurs 1 - 20.11.99), when Leonhardsen got the solitary goal, and current staff members Steffen Freund and Tim Sherwood were in the Spurs team, managed by George Graham.
Dave Jones was the Southampton manager at the time, but later in the season, he was replaced by Glenn Hoddle, who suffered a 7-2 defeat at White Lane in March 2000. (Spurs 7 Southampton 2). A year later, when Graham was sacked soon after the arrival of the ENIC regime, Glenn was tempted away from Southampton, which caused not a little rancour between the two clubs. Ironically, Glenn's last game in charge of Spurs was a 3-1 home defeat by Southampton in September, 2003 (Spurs 1 Southampton 3 - 20.09.03).
The Southampton programme will no doubt make plenty of references to the string of poor results for Spurs at St. Mary's, including a horrible 4-0 FA Cup defeat in January 2003, and a 1-0 defeat in a league match three days prior to that.
The most famous match between the two sides occurred on 29th April, 1978, when Spurs, having led the way in Division Two for so much of the season, had a poor run-in and were left in the undesirable position of needing a point from promotion rivals Southampton in the last game of the season. A 0-0 stalemate ensued, and both teams were promoted, along with Bolton. Plenty of nails were bitten that day.
Spurs are now on their longest run in the top flight, or indeed, any Division of the Football/Premier League, and they are one of the five longest serving current continuing members of the top tier. (The others are Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United)
Southampton have the unenviable record of conceding more goals in the first 8 games of a Premier League season than any other team. Nigel Adkins will want to put that right tomorrow, but will surely have problems, if Bale does appear, and is (hopefully) Mousa Dembele also returns from his injury suffered on International duty.
The "Saints" haven't had the best of luck in some games. Their fans were in dreamland when they were 2-1 up after 68 minutes at Manchester city on the opening day of the season, before City came back to win 3-2. Southampton twice had the lead in the 3-2 home defeat against Manchester United, but Robin van Persie scored two late goals to secure the win, to make it a hat-trick day for him. Arsenal beat Southampton 6-1 at The Emirates, and a little respite was gained with a 4-1 home win against Aston Villa.
Southampton have got a run of games to come in which they will be seeking to gain points against more moderate opposition. They will of course be hoping to get a win tomorrow. I'm hoping for a 2-0 win for Spurs, but the atmosphere will be quite hostile, because of our recent history in that part of the world. Harry Redknapp might get a mention, as he was in charge at St. Mary's when the "Saints" were relegated. Maybe he's waiting in the Sandbanks area for another call to help a team in trouble, within easy reach of home!
