Spurs Wars - A New Hope

Many congratulations to Wigan Athletic upon reaching their first FA Cup Final, where they will meet Manchester City. Wigan reached the semi-final for the first time this year, beating Millwall 2-0. The "Latics" have faced lower league opposition in every round along their way to the final, with the exception of perhaps the most notable result of their season, when they beat Everton 3-0 at Goodison park, with three goals scored in three first half minutes.

As has been well reported, going to Wembley has been a very emotional experience for the club chairman, Dave Whelan, who, when a player for Blackburn, broke his leg in the 1960 FA Cup Final, when 10-man Blackburn lost 3-0 to Wolves.

Whelan, a proud and honourable man and football chairman, is now 76. He was born in Bradford, and started his football league career as a full back with Blackburn in August 1956. He finished his Blackburn career after that FA Cup Final injury after 124 league and cup appearances, in which he scored the only three goals of his professional career.

After recovering from that injury, Dave Whelan continued his career with Crewe Alexandra, until retirement from the game in 1966. Whelan played against Tottenham 4 times when with Blackburn (Won 2 Lost 2). In February 1960, Rovers beat Spurs at White Hart Lane on 20th in the FA Cup (3-1), but the following week, lost 4-1 at home to Spurs, who would narrowwly miss out on League glory that season, but of course would go on to historic greatness the following season. It must have hurt Blackburn a great deal that season to lose the FA Cup Final, and to see Burnley win the league.

May 11th will not be Wigan's first major cup final, becaause they reached the Carling Cup Final in their first Premier League season (2005-06) by beating Arsenal (on away goals) in the semi-final. Spurs loanee Reto Ziegler made a substitute appearance at Highbury, and also in the final, played at Cardiff, which Wigan lost 4-0 to Man Utd.

Reto Ziegler is now 27, and a full International player for Switzerland. Reto spent four seasons with Sampdoria, and is now on Juventus's books, but has yet to make a senior league appearance for the Italian Champions and current league leaders. Ziegler has spent time on loan this season at both Lokomotiv (Moscow), and now Fenerbahce, who are playing Benfica in the Europa League semi-final. Ziegler played in last night's first leg, which Fenerbahce won 1-0.

Prestigious Cup Final aside, Wigan have their now perennial battle against relegation to contemplate. Like Spurs, they have five games to play, and after us, they face games against West Brom (A), Swansea (H), Arsenal (A), and a home game against Aston Villa on the last day of the season. Whatever the result tomorrow, manager Roberto Martinez will surely still see an escape route with winnable points in three of those remaining games.

Wigan will be all out to beat us, of course, and having shocked us at The Lane in November (Spurs 0 Wigan 1), when Ben Watson scored his only goal of the season, they will see no reason not to repeat that particular experience. Watson incidentally has missed most of the season, after suffering a leg fracture in November at Anfield, but he is close to recovery now.

Martinez persists with his 3-4-3 formation, which last week at Upton Park saw Scharner, Caldwell and Alcaraz at the back, with the four man midfield of Boyce, McCarthy, Gomez, and Figueroa, with McManaman, Kone and Maloney at the front. Scharner is the man who scored Wigan's one goal in that famous 9-1 drubbing, but since then they've beaten us twice at White Hart Lane, although the only time they beat us at home was in January 2009, when Figueroa scored the only goal of the game.

Although Wigan are three points behind Villa, I honestly fancy them to survive, because Villa (who have only four games remaining) face the tougher fixtures against re-juvenated Sunderland, battling Norwich, Chelsea, and what could be a last day decider at the DW Stadium.

However, Spurs have new hope after beating Man City last week, and with Arsenal and Chelsea not playing till Sunday, we have a chance of re-claiming third place for a day, and perhaps longer. Our destiny is certainly in our hands (or should I say feet).

We'll be playing a more conventional midfield (hopefully with Aaron Lennon returning), as opposed to the rigid 4-2-3-1 which we played for much of the first half of the season. I wrote last week that I'd like to see AVB start with the line-up that ended the City game, but with Lennon in the reckoning for a start, this will not happen. What I do hope to see is Spurs using width on both flanks.

I am sure we are in for an exciting game, and I fancy it could be of an open nature. I'm going for a 2-0 win for Spurs. May the force be with us! There will certainly be a massive Spurs contingent present, with the away stand sold out.

Our referee tomorrow will be Martin Atkinson, who perhaps worryingly was in charge of the November home defeat by Wigan. More promising was the fact he looked after the sunderland game which we won 2-1 on 29th December. Mr. Atkinson is not one of our favourites, having been in charge of the FA Cup semi-final last year when he and his colleagues awarded a highly dubious second goal to Chelsea, which changed the course of the game.
