It was a cold evening for this Youth Cup tie in East London which still drew a good sized crowd. The press box is high up the East stand with tight fitting seats. Thanks have to go to West Ham for providing refeshments on such a cold evening. Both teaams fielded a stronger side compared to the U-18 group game two weeks ago.

Spurs lined up with Veljkovic and Ogilvie in front of McGee with McQueen at right back and Ward on the left. Dombaxe sat in from of them with Onomah and Bentaleb in midfield while Coulthirst led the line with Michael-Percil on his right and McEvoy on his left.

Spurs kicked off the first half attacking the Bobby Moore end with the two wide players making early inroads. Michael-Percil played in a cross that went just over the bar and McEvoy put his cross behind. In between Bentaleb gave the ball away in his own half but Lee could not find an opening.

Dombaxe tried a shot from about 30 yards which was an easy save for Guzman. Shortly afterwards Dombaxe fired over from a corner. The visitors took the lead when McEvoy got down the left and whipped in a low cross that Michael-Percil turned in at the far post via the unlucky Shaw.

The Hammers responded with an effort by Cullen that was saved. West Ham won their first corner soon after that. Spurs increased their lead when Bentaleb sent Michael-Percil away down the right and his centre was met by Coulthirst getting ahead of his marker.

McGee saved from Lee before Coulthirst turned McEvoy's cross wide. From a West Ham corner McGee caught the ball and cleared it upfield when McEvoy ran onto it unmarked and had a clear run at goal to beat the exposed Guzman for the visitors' third.

Spurs then took their foot off the gas and sought to control the game which would have been okay if they had retained possession better. Lee got wide on the left and put in a great cross that Mavila failed to control at the far post. Sadlier went down in the area but the referee waved play-on and Lee fired wide at the far post. West Ham got a goal back when Dombaxe stumbled, allowing Lee to gain possession and advance on the Spurs goal drawing McGee before scoring low into the far corner.

A free kick by Dombaxe on the right was floated to the far post where Onomah laid it off to McEvoy who got to the line and won a corner. From the corner Coulthirst fired wide.

Neither side made any changes for the second half which saw an early run and shot by Ward that Guzman saved. Bentaleb received a corner and played in Dombaxe to fire over. Ward got down the left and played in McEvoy who cut inside but drove wide. Spurs made their first change replacing Onomah with Winks.

McGee saved from Bywater at the expense of a corner but could do nothing when Lee crossed from the right for the same player to head home at the far post. The Irons had a chance to draw level when Dombaxe played a square ball to Winks in the centre circle. The midfielder failed to control the ball, allowing Mavila to stride forward and hit a shot that McGee saved. This woke Spurs up and Michael-Percil attacked down the right before setting up Dombaxe for strike that Guzman saved.

McEvoy came inside from the left and drew a save before Spurs scored again. Ward (up in support of McEvoy on the left) got the ball back from the winger and curled his effort into the top corner at Guzman's near post from about 25 yards. Whether he was going for goal or putting in a cross only he knows, but it was the killer.

Both sides made changes with Spurs replacing Michael-Percil with Akindayini and changing to 4-4-2 with McEvoy switching to the right. Ward was released down the left and his cross found Coulthirst attacking the near post. Guzman saved his flick only for the ball to rebound to McEvoy at the far post who turned it in for a fifth goal.

Spurs replaced Dombaxe with Lesniak in the centre of midfield. Coulthirst was released through the right channel and attempted to go round Guzman who held him up and blocked his effort. With time running out, Guzman denied Coulthirst again with the last chance falling to Sadlier who fired over.

This was a good performance by Spurs who had the game won inside half an hour, but took their foot off the gas, allowing the hosts to get back into the game. Spurs stirred themselves and put the game to bed, moving smoothly into the next round. West Ham could not live with the pace on the wings which was missing from the U-18 group game that the Hammers had won. In that game, Ward was outstanding and in tonight's game he took a battering twice from Alexander and was also caught by the ball twice in the stomach (one lower than the other in an area that would make most men wince).
