Here's a team in claret and blue we CAN beat!
Here is a team in claret and blue that we can beat, so let's go out and do it shall we? We all know what is at stake, with (mercifully) just one point required to pip Man Utd at the post for the last place in the Europa League.
Surely, Spurs couldn't wish for a better team to play in this last game of the 2013-14 season. After all, we have now won our last four games against Villa 12-0 on aggregate, and 9 of our last 12 games against “The Villans”, being unbeaten in those games. I mean, Villa haven't even scored against us since May 2012, and you have to back even longer - to September, 2008 since they last managed to beat Spurs. That was on 15th September, 2008, when Spurs lost 2-1 at home and went to the bottom of the league table.
Those were the bad old days before Harry Redknapp was appointed, and now we are in the bad old days before who knows who will be appointed to take over from stand-in Tim Sherwood. In 2008, Brad Friedel was playing for Villa, continuing what would be his fabulous 310 run of consecutive Premier League games. Villa's side included Gareth Barry, former Spur Luke Young at right back, and Ashley Young on the wing.
Incidentalaly, it was in last season's home game that Hugo Lloris made his Premier League debut for Spurs, thus bringing to an end that Brad Friedel run of consecutive games.
The last three seasons have been pretty miserable for Villa fans, who have seen their side at the wrong end of the table for much of the time. A couple of wins (over Norwich and Chelsea) in March put them just into the top half of the table, but their form since then has been so bad that Villa were once again drawn into the relegation battle. Their only win in the last 8 games was last Saturday, when they beat Hull 3-1, and finally secured another season in The Premier League, where they will remain one of the seven ever-presents at that level. Villa are seventh in that list, behind Everton in sixth place, and Spurs in fifth. Spurs have now won 58 more Premier League points than have Villa.
On Wednesday night, Paul Lambert played a flat back five for the first hour against Manchester City, and his team held out until Dzeko scored in the 64th minute. The game opened out, as Villa, to their credit, tried to get back on level terms, but City ploughed to a 4-0 win to become hot favourites to secure their second Premier League trophy in three seasons on Sunday.
Villa fans used to campaign for Doug Ellis to give up his Chairmanship of the club, but they haven't seen the level of investment from new owner Randy Lerner that I am sure they hoped for. There aren't that many rich Arabs or Russians to go around, after all.
One of our biggest wins of the season against domestic opposition came in the Capital One Cup Third Round tie at Villa Park in September, when we won 4-0. By a strange co-incidence the referee that day was Mr. Jon Moss, who referees Sunday's game. On that occasion Mr. Moss seemingly ignored Vertonghen pulling down the shorts of Helenius, apparently trying to play an advantage to Villa.
Our league win at Villa Park was less convincing (2-0), but it was a great day for Andros Townsend, who scored his first Premier League goal for his club; was man of the match; and was riding high, after notable success with England. Sadly for Townsend, he is now doubtful for England's World Cup squad, after sustaining injury at Stoke a couple of weeks ago.
Villa won't be a pushover for Spurs. After all, they are safe, and they will be able to play relaxed football. Lambert will surely be keen to try and get something out of the game to prevent a possible slide even lower in the league. Every place counts for prize money, remember? I suspect we will not see a flat back five in this game.
Spurs could do with Vertonghen being fit enough to play this week. He hasn't played since that horrible Liverpool defeat at the end of March. With Vlad Chiriches being required to take over from the suspended Younes Kaboul, we could do with Vertonghen at left back, whether he likes it or not. A less than enthusiastic Vertonghen would be better there than the less than competent danny Rose, in my opinion.
Capoue could also be available, and we all know how much we could do with a strong defensive midfielder, against any opposition. I don't think Mousa Dembele is going to be fit for us, with Townsend joining Kyle Walker and Erik Lamela on the long term injury list.
Villa have plenty of injury concerns of their own, with Benteke the highest profile absentee. Agbonlahor could be fit enough for this game.
I have made a positive prediction for this game, and have gone for a 3-1 win. As we all know too well, anything could happen, and a performance like that against the Claret and Blue side from down the road last week would see us failing to get the point we require for Europa League football next season.
I'll be hanging around after the game to applaud Hugo Lloris, who I am sure will be presented with the player of the season award, but for once (the last time was 2003) I won't be staying for the "lap of honour". I do plan to be following my team up and down the country and across Europe next season though.
· 15 years ago this week - On May 10th, 1999, Spurs drew 2-2 at home to Chelsea.
· On the last day of the 1998-99 season, Les Ferdinand gave Spurs the lead at Old Trafford, but we ultimately succumbed and lost 2-1. Allegedly, on that Arsenal fans sung for Spurs, because they would have won the title had Spurs managed a win.
