Spurs are looking for a first

Spurs will be playing only their second Saturday 3 o'clock kick-off of the season, and their first since September 14th when Tony Pulis's Crystal Palace come to White Hart Lane today.

This will be our fifth Premier League home game against "The Eagles", and remarkably we are still looking for our first home win against this team in this competition. In the very first Premier League season, Palace were only the second visitors to The Lane, and Spurs had drawn at Southampton and lost at home to Coventry. We were still looking for an elusive first win after the Palace game. They even had a 2-1 lead until Steve Sedgley got an 88th minute equaliser. Gordon Durie had given us the lead, before Eddie McGoldrick equalised and Eric Young gave the visitors an 80th minute lead. Both Neil Ruddock and Andy Thorn were sent off that day. Dean Austin made his Spurs league debut that day, having been signed from Southend, and would later play for Palace.

On December 27th, 1994, a Spurs side featuring four of the "famous five" (Klinsmann, Sheringham, Anderton and Barmby couldn't beat Palace, and it finished 0-0. In November, 1997, after Gerry Francis had left, and with Christian Gross appointed with Chris Hughton as his under-study, Spurs lost 1-0. Neil Shipperley scored the only goal of the game. Spurs did beat Palace at Selhurst Park in the run-in that season. Another victory at Selhurst Park to beat Wimbledon 6-2 ensured our Premier League survival. One of the Palace players that season - Herman Hreidarsson - had the dubious distinction of being relegated with almost every team he played for. He was relegated with Palace, Wimbledon, Ipswich, Charlton, Portsmouth and Coventry during his career in England. Brentford was the only English team he played for who were not relegated during his time as a "Bees'" player. Hreidarsson last played back in Iceland last September.

We did manage to beat Palace in our next game at White Hart Lane in January 2004, but that was in the FA Cup Third Round (3-0), but again we could only draw the last Premier League game against Palace played at The Lane in December 2004. ((Spurs 1 Palace 1 - 28.12.04)) Jermain defoe scored his tenth Premier League goal of the season to put us in the lead, but Andy Johnson got a 79th minute equaliser.

So, here we are looking for our first Premier League home win against Palace. Perhaps, should we fail, we'll get another crack next season, because there is no doubt that since the appointment of Tony Pulis on November 23rd as manager, Palace have become a more resilient side. Under Ian Holloway, they'd managed just one win all season. On the day Pulis was appointed, his side won 1-0 at Hull, and they've won a further three league games since then, as well as beating West Brom last week in the FA Cup.

Under Pulis, Palace have given themselves a fighting chance of survival, lifting themselves off the bottom of the table. Perhaps their best performance was to lose just 1-0 at The Etihad where other times (us included!) have been simply thrashed by the City superstars.

Our overall League record against Palace is a good one. This will be our thirtieth such meeting, and so far we have won 14, drawn 10, and lost only 5. The first League meeting between the sides came in 1969, and whilst we won a League "Double" that season, there was a famous "night of the long knives" by Bill Nicholson, after Palace dumped us out of the FA Cup in a fourth round replay. Jimmy Greaves was one of the four top players dropped after that game, and he never played another first team game for Spurs. Greavsie moved to West Ham in the move that brought Martin Peters to Tottenham.

It's too early for official team news, but the Physio room site suggests that while Spurs are top of the table for players listed as injured, Soldado, Defoe, Townsend and even Sandro could all be available for selection. That does leave Paulinho, Kaboul and Vertonghen still among the casualties, with the exact status of Naughton, Lamela, Sigurdsson and Holtby unknown. (STOP PRESS:- Spurs say that Townsend, Sigurdsson, Defoe and Holtby are all in contention for places, whereas Sandro is definitely not available, along with the three players mentioned above)

We've had a full week's rest since last Saturday's FA Cup exit, and I shall be satisfied with nothing less than a Spurs win. I think we'll get it too, and am going for a 3-1. I fear that all of the top seven teams will win this week-end, and that Spurs will gain no ground on our rivals, but of course it's important to keep in that race for the top four!

Tomorrow's referee is Michael Oliver, who took charge of our 1-0 league defeat at The Emirates, and last officiated for us in the home game against Hull, when he awarded us what was perceived as a generous penalty, which decided the game.
