Spurs face an unhappy "Toon"
It's an unhappy "Toon" that Spurs will face at St. James' Park. They will be missing their top two scorers, who have contributed 18 of the team's 32 Premier League goals this season. Their best player (Cabaye), scorer of 7 of those goals, has been sold to PSG, and their top scorer, Loic Remy, is suspended for one more game, following his transgression in the 0-0 game at Norwich on 28th January.
At the time of writing, Newcastle have the longest injury list of the Premier League, although three of those names - Gouffran, Obertan and Cisse could be available for today's game. Those definitely out include full back Debuchy (injured in Saturday's game at Chelsea), midfield "enforcer" Tiote, and skipper Coloccini.
Remy is a loan player from Queens Park Rangers, and Newcastle made no significant incoming transfer other than that this season. No wonder former Spur, Joe Kinnear, has finally lost his job as Director of Football. Kinnear's appointment looked more like one of charity after his recovery from major heart surgery, which led to his replacement as manager in 2009.
Amongst other morale-sapping events affecting Newcastle recently was the second consecutive 3-0 home defeat by Sunderland. Last year it was the comedic and dramatic Paolo Di Canio in charge of the "Black Cats". This year it was the more restrained, but no less delighted Gus Poyet. Newcastle have lost their last three local derby matches, and have won only one of the last seven such matches. No wonder there were bad-tempered disturbances outside the St. James' Park stadium recently.
On the face of it then, Spurs should be facing a moderate task to maintain their excellent away record this season. However, as Fulham illustrated at Old Trafford on Sunday, form is not always a good predictor of results. Indeed, Newcastle were not expected to take any points home from White Hart Lane in November, but Tim Krul's monumental performance and Loic Remy's goal ensured that the "Magpies" stole all three points from under our noses. Newcastle also managed a few shots on target at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but their attack lacked the necessary sting to breach Chelsea's defence.
Newcastle will have their fans baying for success, and their home record against Spurs in 19 previous games is on their side. Spurs have managed only three wins in the last 22 years in league games. One of those was as long ago as August 1993, when Teddy Sheringham scored the only goal of the game. The next win came in October 2001, when Darren Anderton and Gus Poyet scored Spurs' winning goals. I remember upsetting the locals driving away from this win with my scarf prominently displayed across the back window, as they "shepherded" me out of town!
Our last league win at Newcastle was nearly 10 years ago, when "Thimmee" Atouba scored our only goal of the game, and his only Spurs goal in his one-season career at White Hart Lane.
We haven't been to Newcastle since the opening day of the 2012-13 season on August 18th (Newcastle 2 Spurs 1). Spurs won 10 away games last season, but this was not one of them.
I've received no additional team news from Spurs as yet, but I don't think there will be any change from Sunday, with Lamela, Chiriches, Sandro and Sigurdsson likely to be missing. Sandro's continuing absence has been a major source of frustration for Spurs fans, who are desperate to see "The Beast" in action again. He's missed our last 11 games, and only started 12 of our 37 games to date this season.
I am predicting a 2-1 win for Spurs, but I am hoping it will be even better. My match report is likely to be delayed until Thursday afternoon.
