Spurs must keep the pressure on the top four
Tim Sherwood takes his Spurs to Carrow Road tomorrow for yet another "must win" game. The odds are in favour of Spurs, whose away form is currently the very best in the Premier League this season, with 9 wins, and no defeats in their last 7 away league games. Indeed, 6 of those games have been victories for Spurs. Sherwood's Spurs are unbeaten in 5 away league games.
Moreover, Spurs have not failed to score in any of Sherwood's 10 league games in charge, so Chris Hughton's Norwich will approach this game with considerable trepidation.
Norwich have yet to beat Spurs at home in 6 Premier League attempts. You have to go back 23 years to April, 1991 for the last time Norwich beat Spurs at home in a league game. That game was played in the mid-week approaching the famous FA Cup semi-final in which a Gascoigne-inspired Spurs would beat Arsenal 3-1. With that game on their mind, Spurs fielded a weakened side, and even gave a debut (and his only Spurs appearance) to 20 year old midfielder Peter Garland, who came off the bench to replace Gascoigne.
Norwich's side included two future Spurs (Sherwood and substitute Ruel Fox) and four past Spurs players (Culverhouse, Bowen, Polston and Crook). Crook even scored one of the two Norwich goals, with his only goal of the season.
This season's home game against Norwich was one of the few entertain9ng home league performances of the season under AVB, with in-form Gylfi Sigurdsson scoring both our goals.
Last season's away game at Norwich was drawn 1-1, with our goal coming from Gareth Bale (of course), and Lewis Holtby making an exciting cameo debut off the bench. Spurs fans fell in love with Holtby at the outset, and most are mystified as to why he has been allowed to go to Fulham on loan for the rest of the season.
Sherwood though has kept his faith in Nabil Bentaleb, who has played all 90 minutes in every one of Spurs' last 9 games. Bentaleb will no doubt be one of the four or five players who featured in Thursday night's game in Ukraine, and who will be required tomorrow.
Key players Hugo Lloris, Kyle Walker and Emmanuel Adebayor were all left at home mid-week, along with Younes Kaboul, who may well replace club captain Michael Dawson tomorrow. Vlad Chiriches remains out with his back problem, and it would seem that Sandro is still not match fit. Mousa Dembele is likely to take part though, with Aaron Lennon surely preferred to Andros Townsend, who is still searching for his early season form.
Norwich got a very creditable point at home against Man City recently, but they have very few goals in the tank (only 2 in their last 7 games), and they have won only one of their last 11 Premier League games. That was a 1-0 over Hull, with Ryan Bennett scoring a late, late goal. In fact, in their last 17 games, Norwich have scored more than one goal in a match on only one occasion. That was early in December, when they beat West Brom 2-0 at The Hawthorns.
Chelsea v Everton today is the only high profile game featuring our rivals for the Champions League, and Spurs must win this game to maintain the pressure, with tough games on our agenda in March. All the indications are that Spurs will win this one, and I'm going for a 2-0.
Norwich have been flirting with the relegation zone all season, and will be determined rivals, with a noisy crowd behind them. It won't be easy.
The referee for this game will be Craig Pawson. Mr. Pawson has yet to take charge of a Spurs game, and was only appointed to the Premier League select panel this season. His first Premier League game was last season (Swansea v Newcastle), and this season he has been in charge of 7 Premier League games.
· 15 years ago, on February 24th, Spurs beat Leeds 2-0 in an FA Cup replay. Even George Graham was jumping!
