Time to knuckle down

With one notable exception, Spurs have generally under-achieved against Norwich since their return to the Premier League two years ago. We won our first meeting on 27th December, 2011 2-0, with a scintillating two goal performance by Gareth Bale, who also scored a sensational equaliser in last season's league game in January.

We finally, officially, said goodbye to Bale on the day of our last match, two weeks ago at The Emirates. After that defeat, it is time for the new boys to settle down, and to knuckle down to the season, starting with a win in what will be our first Saturday game of the season. Saturday matches will be a rare commodity again for Spurs this season, depending upon their progress in The Europa League. Our next home game against Chelsea is also on a Saturday (lunch-time), but then we have to wait till December, and that depends upon future TV dates being arranged.

That under-achievement against "The Canaries" is reflected in a horrible home defeat in April 2012. That was one of Ledley King's last three games for Spurs, all of which were lost, and which ultimately led Ledley to call it a day last summer. The Norwich defeat (and one at QPR) also contributed towards another narrow failure in recent years to cement Champions League qualification.

Last year's home game against Norwich also took place in September, and ended in a 1-1 draw. Mousa Dembele scored on his debut, but the disappointing result meant that we had only two points from our first three games under Andre Villas-Boas's leadership. A lot of fans were concerned about AVB at this stage, but their confidence would be increased before the season went much further.

Despite Bale's departure there is a wave of optimism about our chances this season. After all, we do have four more points from our first three games this year! Having said that, the fans' morale needs a boost after the last result.

Chris Hughton made a number of changes to his squad in this summer's transfer window. His most notable acquisition was the 24 year old Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel, signed from Sporting Lisbon. Van Wolfswinkel has made two senior International appearances. One was against Ukraine in 2010. The other was as a substitute this summer against Indonesia. He is not such a high profile player then, but he does have a good scoring record, having scored 14 league goals in each of his last two seasons for Sporting, and 15 the year before for Utrecht. He got off the mark for his new club in his first game at home to Everton.

Norwich's other signings include former Blackburn defender Martin Olsson, and Javier Garrido, who was on loan last season from Lazio, but has now been signed completely. Garrido was on Man City's books for three seasons between 2007 and 2010. Former Captain Grant Holt, now 32, has moved down to The Championship, and now plays for Wigan.

Andre Villas-Boas has reported that both Etienne Capoue and Aaron Lennon remain out, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson returned from international duty with a dead leg, but did train yesterday (Thursday). Apparently Vlad Chiriches's work permit has still not been ratified, so we may not see his debut tomorrow. On the other hand we can surely look forward to the home debuts of Erik Lamela, and Christian Eriksen. (Did you know that Eriksen was born in a town called Middelfart, Denmark?)

Lamela has been used sparingly this week for Argentina, so I am hoping to see him start. However, Eriksen played two 90 minute games for Denmark, and perhaps will be on the bench.

It's time for Spurs to score a league goal from open play, and tomorrow's game is surely a good opportunity to do that. I am predicting a 3-1 win. The match referee will be Lee Mason.

Did you know? - Spurs goalkeeper Ian Walker made his first team debut on 10th April, 1991 against Norwich, at Carrow Road. Ian's Dad, Mike Walker (also once a goalkeeper) was the Norwich coach at the time. Ian recently spent some time in charge of non-league Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire, but was last known to be working as goalkeeping coach for Shanghai Shenhua.

15 years ago this week, we lost 3-0 at home to Middlesbrough. Gazza played for "Boro"
