Battling for fifth

By the time this game is played tomorrow lunchtime, Spurs could be fighting to regain the fifth place that looks like their most realistic target for the remaining 8 games to be played this season. Similarly, Southampton could be trying to regain 8th place, should Newcastle beat Crystal Palace today. In any case, Mauricio Pochettino's team will not have given up on their own chances of seizing a European qualification place, which currently is likely to be available for teams finishing fifth and sixth.

It's an outside chance for "The Saints", with both Everton and Manchester United now in good form. Spurs have not given up on a top four place, although that is looking even more of an outside chance.

The good news for Spurs is that four of the absentees from Thursday night's Europa League exit are said to be "in the frame" for selection tomorrow by Tim Sherwood. These are Hugo Lloris, Younes Kaboul, Mousa Dembele and Emmanuel Adebayor. Add to those the return of Jan Vertonghen, and you have a much strengthened team.

That team will therefore include two recognised centre-backs, and the star of the Spurs win at St. Mary's Stadium in December - Emmanuel Adebayor. The match was Adebayor's first Premier League start of the season, and he rewarded us with two goals.

Adebayor hasn't looked back since and is in the running to be Spurs Odyssey player of the season, with Hugo Lloris his only realistic rival for that award. Adebayor has scored 11 goals since being re-instated by Tim Sherwood, but he hasn't scored in his last four games, and owes us a goal or two tomorrow, assuming he does make the starting line-up.

Another Spurs star that day was Nacer Chadli, who only played the last half hour of that game, but displayed power, pace and skill on the right wing, as I recall. Chadli was our two goal man of the match in Lisbon on Thursday in a game which had an exciting finish and even hope of Spurs forcing extra-time after that 3-1 first leg deficit.

Surely Spurs can carry that end of match commitment and desire into tomorrow's game? We've lost three of our last four league games, so we need to find a winning streak again.

We managed a league "double" over Southampton last season, and can do it again tomorrow. Last year's home game was won late on by a superb Gareth Bale goal.

Can it really be 14 years since we beat Glenn Hoddle's "Saints" team 7-2 in March, 2000? On that day, George Graham was the Spurs manager, and his team came up with an uncharacteristic hatful of goals. Southampton actually took the lead, but future Spur (and now sadly deceased) Dean Richards put us level with an own goal. Steffen Iversen carried away the match ball that day.

It won't be easy tomorrow. Has it ever been easy at home this season? Southampton have had an excellent season, and are truly established back in the top tier after only two seasons. They have good players, including four in contention for an England World Cup place. Spurs will have their hands full. However, I'm feeling confident, providing all those who are described as "in the frame" can play. I'm even going for a Sherwood side to score three goals for the sixth time since his appointment. My prediction is for a 3-1 win.

Tomorrow's referee will be the relatively inexperienced Anthony Taylor. We last saw him at Hull, and the only other game he has been in charge of us this season was the Boxing Day home draw with West Brom.
