Not many Welsh players at The Lane tomorrow
Swansea are in their third Premier League season, and such is the progress they've made since their promotion from the Championship that they are almost part of the establishment. Michael Laudrup has bought wisely, and made some high profile signings, which will surely ensure another good season.
It was a great achievment for "The Swans" to win their first major trophy in the Capital One Cup. Yes, their victims in the final were lowly Bradford City, but Swansea did what they had to do, and convincingly at that. Remember, they beat a strong Chelsea side in the semi-finals, and also put paid to Liverpool on their way to Wembley.
As Spurs (in 2008) and other clubs before them have done, Swansea suffered an end of season dip in form, having achieved that success, and having secured a comfortable mid-table position. They won just two of their last 11 games of the season, beating Newcastle 1-0 at home, and more or less consigned Wigan to The Championship with a 3-2 win at the DW Stadium in early May.
Also like Spurs, Swansea have surely guaranteed their path to the group stages of the Europa League with their 5-1 win over the Romanian team Petrolul Ploiesti on Thursday night. Laudrup fielded virtually a full strength team for this game, whereas Andre Villas-Boas was able to juggle his squad a little more for Spurs' 5-0 win in Georgia. Thus Spurs, on the whole, should have fresher legs than their opponents tomorrow.
Laudrup's highest profile signings are probaly midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool, and the club record signing of striker Wilfried Bony from Vitesse Arnhem in The Netherlands. Bony is a 24 year old Ivory Coast International, who scored 31 goals in the Dutch league last season. He has scored in both his games so far; in the 4-1 home defeat by Man Utd last week, and against Petrolul Ploiesti. He will be a danger, but not the only threat from the Welsh team.
Swansea still have Michu, of course, although Laudrup might be keen for the tranasfer window to close with clubs such as Arsenal perhaps on the hunt for a reliable striker. Michu was one of the players of last season in the Premier League.
Laudrup has been shopping in Spain again, with all his knowledge of that league, and has acquired a Spanish defender, midfielder and attacking player in Amat, Canas, and Pozuelo respectively. Former Spur Wayne Routledge is having a successful time at Swansea, and scored two of their goals on Thursday night.
Swansea will be keen to break their Premier League duck, but statistics are against them, as they have never won a league game at White Hart Lane, and haven't collected a league point there since 1930. Mind you, it's not as if we have met that often, is it?
The scoreline in Swansea's defeat was flattering to Manchester United, as the home team had put up a good show, but Van Persie and Welbeck took their chances very well.
We beat Swansea at home and away last season, but both games were close. In the home match, it was just 1-0, thanks to a tasty whack by Jan Vertonghen with 15 minutes remaining.(Spurs 1 Swansea 0 - 16.12.12). Vertonghen was left at home this week to make sure he is fully fit for tomorrow's game. The same principle applied to Aaron Lennon, but he might face more competition for his place with the midfield riches now available to Spurs. However, I suspect that Andros Townsend's next opportunity to shine will be in next Thursday's home match against Dinamo Tbilisi.
Only two Welshmen featured in Swansea's team last Saturday tea-time. One of those was defender and Captain Ashley Williams, also allegedly being coveted by clubs such as Arsenal. Midfielder Ben Davies, who is still only 20 is an established member of the team, having played 33 league games last season.
One Welshman who won't be at White Hart Lane tomorrow is of course Gareth Bale, seemingly on the verge of his dream move to Real Madrid. Spurs, and their fans are feeling sour over the Chelsea hi-jack of the Willian move, but at the end of the day, we only want players at our club who really want to play for us, don't we. With or without Bale, I feel really excited about our stronger squad, and the season ahead.
I am making my prediction with football betting online, and expect an exciting home start for our team, with a 3-1 win.
Tomorrow's referee will be Mr. N. Swarbrick, relatively new to the Premier League. He looked after us twice last season, in the 2-0 home win against Villa, and the 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.
