Man of the match – Harry Winks
Spurs missed out on a semi-final place following a great second day which saw them win both games well to get to 7 points. This was despite the five goals scored, giving them a +3 goal difference. Fluminense won 3-1 over Vitesse in the last game of the day to also finish +3. Because Fluminense beat Spurs in the opening match they went through on the head to head rule.
Spurs had to be content with playing Feyenoord for the fifth place at the tournament. Feyenoord had qualified for this game by beating Mexico in a penalty shoot-out after they finished level in their group.
Spurs lined up with Voss in goal behind Ball and Ogilvie with Walkes at right back and Walker-Peters on the left. Lesniak anchored the midfield with Lameiras and Winks alongside him. Akindayini led the line with McEvoy on his right and Oduwa to his left. Nathan (Oduwa) wore the Captain's armband for the third time.
Feyenoord had an early chance winning a corner from which Spurs broke through McEvoy who played in Winks to win a corner for Spurs. With Spurs on the front foot they forced the Dutch back keeping the pressure on their defence. Akindayini made the breakthrough winning the ball on the left, before turning away from his marker and firing low across the goal inside the far post. McEvoy was on hand to make sure it went in.
Feyenoord responded with Dammers firing wide but Spurs continued to have the better of the game. McEvoy played in Winks for a chance that De Fockert saved. When Lameiras was fouled just outside the area, Ogilvie took the free kick. The defender curled the ball round the wall inside the left top corner but the keeper was able to tip it away. In the last minute of the half Feyenoord broke down the right and Ball could not cover as he was limping badly. The Dutch failed to make the best of the chance when Dammers put the ball over the bar. McQueen replaced Ball for the last minute.
Spurs made two changes for the second half. Amos replaced Lesniak in midfield and Oduwa was replaced by Georgiou on the left. Lameiras took the Captain's armband.
An early free kick was headed over by Driebergen before Spurs replaced McEvoy on the right with Sonupe. Spurs increased their lead when Walkes received the ball in the area to the right and saw his drive come back off the far post. Lameiras reacted quickest to fire home the rebound.
That was Ruben's last contribution as he was replaced by Miller before the re-start with the armband going to Winks. A minute later the game was settled when Akindayini was released with a long ball out of defence and he had almost a clear run on goal but was stopped in the area. I think the defender was yellow carded and the penalty was given.
Akindayini wanted to take the kick himself, but the usual taker, Winks, took it and made it three from three placing it in the bottom left corner.
Feyenoord brought on Robinson for Klooster and he brought out a good save from Voss minutes later. Spurs looked to have taken their foot of the gas as the Dutch began to have possession in the Spurs half. Slabbekoom drew a save before Robinson curled in an effort from the right which beat Voss but was headed off the line by McQueen for a corner.
In the dying seconds Georgiou got round the back on the left and fired in a shot that appeared to be headed off the line before Miller put it in the net. Looking for comfirmation I saw the linesman on the far side indicating a goal kick which the keeper quickly took before the final whistle. I found out later that the goal had been given to Georgiou to make it 4-0.
After losing the first game to Fluminense Spurs drew with Cruzeiro and won the next three games ending as the top scorers in the competition. If they had started as they finished they could have won the tournament instead of Cruzeiro who won for the fourth time in a row. It was a fine end to the season for the Academy anyway.
Having reported on the game I found that there are a few differences from other reports, including that of the official Spurs site, which has been
widely quoted. The official site gave the first goal to McEvoy and they say that the defender was red carded for the penalty. I did not see anyone make the walk of shame and they did not look a man short. Finally I did not think that the last goal stood but having checked it has been recorded officially as a 4-0 win.
