Mmmmmm - Uruguay v Argentina - should be spicy!
After Spurs beat Sunderland 5-1 in April, at White Hart Lane, Sunderland manager Gus Poyet said his team would need 4 wins from their last 7 games in order to survive.
That's exactly what they did. Not only did the "Black Cats" survive, but they ultimately finished in 14th place, five points clear of the bottom three. Their victims, amazingly and famously, included Chelsea and Manchester United, both away from home.
23 year old Fabio Borini, who was on loan from Liverpool, scored 4 goals in Sunderland's last five games, but he is now back at Liverpool. Sunderland's bid failed, and QPR apparently had a bid accepted, but Borini allegedly priced himself out of the move, so he remains at Liverpool.
Poyet has been busy in the transfer market, but whether he has enough strike power remains to be seen. His team has yet to win in the league, and the three goals scored in their three games have come from the midfield, including one from Jack Rodwell, who was one of their high profile signings from Manchester City, where Rodwell failed to make an impact after a big money move from Everton.
Other signings include the Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates, on loan from Liverpool, and the Argentinean Santiago Vergini from Estudiantes. Another loan signing is also Argentinean - midfielder Ricardo Alvarez from Inter.
All this talk of Uruguay and Argentina makes me think of the leaders of these two teams - Poyet and Pochettino, whose countries usually enjoy high-friction battles. This should be a spicy encounter.
Last year's corresponding fixture was also won by Spurs. In fact we've won our last four Premier League games against this opposition, and on a points per game basis (2.115) probably enjoy our best record against any Premier League opposition. We haven't lost since April 2010, when Darren Bent demonstrated great glee in scoring against Harry Redknapp's Spurs, no doubt happy to get revenge for that "Sandra" comment, made after Bent had missed a sitter for Spurs in a previous season.
Spurs fans are also keen to see their two latest signings, both of whom are yet to make their debut. Defender Federico Fazio (Argentina) hasn't played a competitive game since 12th August, and Benjamin Stambouli (France) has also not played since 17th August. Maybe the bench is their likely starting place.
As Norman Giller wrote earlier this week, Spurs need a kick-start after that Liverpool defeat, but Gus Poyet's side are looking for their first win, and they'll be in front of a keen crowd, as usual. Spurs have had to some back from a goal down in their last two games against this opposition, and it would be a great idea not to give themselves such an obstacle again.
Mauricio Pochettino has reported that Roberto Soldado faces a late test with a neck injury, and that he is doubtful for tomorrow's game. Kyle Walker will of course be absent, following his recent operation on his pelvic injury. Sunderland have no reported injuries.
Both teams will have had a number of players absent for the International break, leaving the coaches with little time to prepare their new squads.
Of course, my heart says that Spurs will continue their domination over Sunderland, but my head is giving me a different message, and I think we may have to settle for a draw. I am sure there will be goals though!
Tomorrow's match referee will be Mr Craig Pawson, who is still quite new to the Premier League. We've only encountered him once before at Norwich in February this year. That was a game we lost to a lower-rated team. Let's hope that is not an omen.
· 10 years ago this week, Rob Green was the Norwich man of the match in a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane.
