Will he, won't he play and/or score?

The big story associated with tomorrow's game is the question of whether Sunderland's new signing, Jermain Defoe will a) play and b) if he plays, will he score? Defoe has secured a tasty three year contract worth up to £80,000 per week, which is not bad going for a 32 year old striker, whose scoring prowess is perhaps on the wane.

Defoe's registration may not be finalised, because Sunderland's Jozy Altidore is supposed to be going in the opposite direction across the pond, but the deal has not been concluded at the time of writing.

If Defoe does make his Sunderland debut tomorrow, Spurs fans would be right to worry, because Jermain has famously scored on every club debut he has made. That includes his first game last year for Toronto FC, where he scored 12 goals in his first 15 games, but then dried up, and seemed to fall out with his club. Hence the move back to England to play for Gus Poyet, with whom who he played in his first spell at Spurs. Both Defoe and Poyet were amongst the scorers in a 4-3 win over Portsmouth on 7th February, 2004.

Defoe would be assured a great welcome from the Spurs fans, whether he plays, and whether or not he scores. I remember when he scored against us in his spell at Portsmouth, he was cheered by the travelling fans.

It's another Saturday three o'clock kick off for Spurs, which is more than welcome, with another one in the FA Cup to follow next week.

Sunderland are immersed in the relegation battle, but a big reason for that is not losing games, but not winning enough. They are the Premier League's draw specialists with more than half their games drawn so far. That includes this season's away game, where we frittered away a winning position. Unfortunately, it was a Harry Kane own goal which gave Sunderland a welcome home point.

On a happier note for Harry Kane, he scored his first Premier League goal for Spurs in the corresponding game last season, when we thrashed Sunderland 5-1, who looked destined for relegation. Gus Poyet led Sunderland to a somewhat miraculous survival, with results including away wins at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford.

This season's resilient results include a recent close defeat (3-2) at The Etihad Stadium, and a 0-0 at home to Chelsea, which rankled Jose Mourinho. That is always good fun to see!

The "Black Cats" have only managed one away win, but for their fans, that was one of the most important games of the season and was a fourth consecutive victory against their nemesis - Newcastle.

Goals have not been easy to come by for Sunderland, and you can therefore understand the interest in Defoe. In recent weeks, Adam Johnson has been in form and has scored three goals. Another former Man City midfielder, Jack Rodwell, has also got on the sheet - against his old team. Former Man City reserve keeper Costel Pantilimon has been getting the nod over Mannone since November. In 11 games, he has conceded more than one goal just three times. Two of those occasions were against City!

Both sides could have fully fit squads for tomorrow's game, but there has been no specific team news as yet. We can expect to see Lee Cattermole back in action, after a groin injury. Cattermole's yellow card count so far this season is 9, so he is always a risky selection.

Mauricio Pochettino successfully rested most of his first choice players this week. Andros Townsend might have played himself into tomorrow's team with a good performance against Burnley. Key players such as Lloris, Fazio, Walker, Eriksen and Kane will surely return. I'd like to see Ryan Mason fit to start too, and to see something of Erik Lamela.

One can't be over-confident about Spurs in any game, but I'll go for a home win, but it might only be by the odd goal.

The match referee is Chris Foy (not Hoy), who we haven't seen since Day One of the season at Upton Park. We did win that game, but he awarded a penalty against us (missed by Noble), and sent off Kyle Naughton for "preventing a goal-scoring opportunity".
