6 points from two games must be the target
It goes without saying that Spurs need to bounce back from Sunday's Capital One Cup Final defeat, and get their heads down in order to achieve the target of 6 points from their next two Premier league games.
Southampton's result last night has already dented Spurs hopes of climbing a place in the table, but a win tonight and on Saturday at Loftus Road would keep them in the mix not only for a Europa League place, but also the hope of finishing in the top four.
What do they have standing in their way? Well, they have two teams with Spurs connections. Gylfi Sigurdsson was discarded by Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino in the summer and snapped up by Swansea where he enjoyed a successful loan period before he signed for Spurs. Sigurdsson scored some handy goals in his time with Spurs, but he seems to have a positive chemistry for Swansea, and with their fans, scoring 4 league goals this season, and offering plenty of assists.
Spurs loanee Tom Carroll is ineligible for tonight's game. Carroll has made 8 Premier League starts and has come off the bench 5 times in such games, so he hasn't been indispensable to "The Swans". Sigurdsson recently served a three match suspension after getting a late red card for a rash challenge in the Swansea's surprise FA Cup defeat at Blackburn, and had a knock in Swansea's league win over Man Utd last month, but is expected to play against his old club tonight. "Siggy" will get a good welcome tonight, I am sure.
Swansea's manager Garry Monk has been a great servant of the club for over 10 years now. Monk will be 36 on Saturday. Eyebrows were raised in some quarters when he took over the reins of managership from Michael Laudrup last year. Signed from Barnsley in the summer of 2004, Monk made his playing debut for Swansea against Northampton, playing fourth tier football. His last game was in the League Cup against Birmingham in September 2013. Monk saw his team play in all four English divisions. Monk became the club captain, but would usually make way for Steven Caulker when he was on loan with "The Swans" from Spurs in the 2011-12 season.
Now Monk has kept a steady hand on the tiller, and Swansea have been in the top half all season, being contenders for a place in Europe for most of that time. They have had the set-back of losing star striker Wilfried Bony to Man City for a big fee, where so far he has spent most of his time on their bench. 29 year old French striker Bafetimbi Gomis has the incentive to try to take over Bony's mantle.
Bony was a constant threat to the Spurs defence in our 2-1 win at The Liberty Stadium in December, which was ahieved with an early Kane goal, and a late one from Eriksen. The combination of the scoreline and goal-scorers has a familar ring, and I hope for the same tonight. I've found that bet recording sites such as Bet Bind can be quite useful for keeping track of your wins and loses.
It's seventh v eighth tonight, and whatever happens tonight , Spurs won't be overtaken, although Swansea have to look over their shoulders at West Ham and Stoke, both of whom play tonight.
The match will quite rightly be over-shadowed by remembrance of Spurs Double-winning and triple FA Cup winning legend Dave Mackay, who sadly died on Monday. I understand the game will be preceded by one minute's applause, and that there will be tributes paid at half-time. No doubt, one of Mackay's contempories, and former Swansea player Cliff Jones will lead those tributes, with other former Spurs players on hand.
It will be an emotional night as The Lane remembers one of its most famous sons. It wouldn't be a bad idea if Mauricio Pochettino invited Cliff Jones into the dressing room to inspire our players with a quote or two of the inspirational Mackay, who would never accept defeat in any game.
Tonight's match referee will be Michael Oliver, who we last saw in November, when we beat Everton 2-1. Eriksen and Soldado scored. That was Soldado's last league goal (his only one this season), and it did come from open play, which is more than you can say for the goal which beat Swansea the last time they came to White Hart Lane in August, 2013. (Spurs 1 Swansea 0)
