A prickly task at The Hawthorns
Spurs have to cope with another case of "new manager syndrome" tomorrow at The Hawthorns, where Tony Pulis will hope to lead his men to their fourth victory since he took charge on 1st January. Two of those wins have come in the FA Cup, against Gateshead and Birmingham, but in the Premier League, the "Baggies" saw off fellow relegation strugglers Hull 1-0. Most recently, West Brom got a 0-0 draw at a frustrated Goodison Park, and they are only one point below Everton.
Spurs didn't do a good job with the new manager situation at Selhurst Park three weeks ago, and they will need to be at their best against a Pulis side, especially one that is getting its defensive drills right.
Since the last round of Premier League games, Spurs have played three Cup games, all of which have been tough, whilst West Brom just had the short trip to St Andrews, Birmingham last week-end. Whilst Mauricio Pochettino has been rotating his squad, he put a strong team out at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night, and most of those players will be needed tomorrow.
It's almost two years since we beat West Brom, having lost this season's home game (best forgotten), and drawn the previous two games. Last year's away game, played in April looked as if it would be a disaster, when we went 3-0 down in the first 31 minutes. During that time, we had been awarded a penalty, but Adebayor dollied it into Foster's hands.
We got one goal back quickly, when Naughton's cross/shot took a wicked deflection off Olsson into his own net. It took Spurs longer to draw level, with Harry Kane heading home a Lennon cross in the 70th minute, and Eriksen hitting an added time third goal. That seems familiar!
Olsson has been a big miss for West Brom this season. He hasn't played since September, and is still a week away from fitness, due to a shin injury. Another key absentee has been Mulumbu, playing in the African Cup of Nations for the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mulumbu apparently has a hamstring injury, and his country are playing a quarter-final game against their neighbours Congo tomorrow.
Our own Nabil Bentaleb (if selected, as likely) will be playing for Algeria against The Ivory Coast on Sunday.
JUSTICE FOR JEFF ASTLE
Information received from Jeff Astle's family
Nine minutes into tomorrow’s game a large banner will be unveiled in the Birmingham Road End (opposite the Tottenham supporters) reading ‘Justice for Jeff’ which starts a minute’s applause - nine being the famous shirt number our Dad wore. The two big screens at The Hawthorns will also display a picture of Jeff with the words ‘If in doubt, sit them out’ which refers to the dangers of concussion in sport.
Spurs fans are more than welcome to join in with the applause if they choose; for which we would be very grateful; but if not we would like to take this opportunity to make them aware of our campaign if they haven’t already seen it via the national media.
The Justice for Jeff banner has been at every West Bromwich Albion home and away game and will continue to be for the rest of this season. Hopefully by then the promised research into the links between heading footballs and brain damage will be in its early stages and, just as importantly, the research into former players and instances of dementia will have commenced.
We are aware that your great club has also had old heroes who suffered or are sadly still suffering with Alzheimer’s or some other Degenerative Brain Disease. Arthur Rowe, Alf Ramsey, Tommy Harmer, Danny Blanchflower, Peter Baker and the 'indestructible Dave Mackay", to name a few.
We would also like to respectfully ask that if you are aware of any other former players who may have died of, or are sadly living with Alzheimer's or any other Degenerative Brain Disease please contact us by emailing dawnastle@justiceforjeff.co.uk. This information is vitally important to forthcoming research. Our dad was the first British footballer to have been confirmed to die from CTE but he wouldn't have been the first and certainly won't be the last.
You can keep up-to-date and learn more about our campaign by visiting our website justiceforjeff.co.uk or through our Facebook and Twitter (#justiceforjeff) pages.
Yours Sincerely,
The Astle Family
Spurs are in the fortunate position of having no players listed as injured at this time, although Dembele took a knock and was substituted at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night. He probably would not be first choice tomorrow, with Pochettino able to field his strongest team, with a full week's break before our next game.
So, we could see a line-up of Lloris; Walker, Fazio, Vertonghen, Rose; Mason, Stambouli; Lamela/Townsend, Eriksen, Chadli; Kane.
It is going to be a tough task at the highest League ground in England in possible very cold and adverse weather conditions. We might be grateful for a draw again.
Tomorrow's match referee will be Kevin Friend, who was in charge for this season's home defeat against West Brom.
· 10 years ago on February 1st, Spurs lost 3-1 at The Reebock Stadium, Bolton.
