So, just why does Adrian Chiles support West Brom?
West Bromwich Albion, without a Premier League win in seven games, and without a win against Spurs in ten meetings, travel to White Hart Lane for an early kick-off on Sunday (1.30pm). It is almost 30 years (November, 1984) since they won at White Hart Lane.
Just what is it that attracts ITV's Adrian Chiles, and Room 101's Frank Skinner to this team, which has not won a major trophy since 1968, when Jeff Astle scored that fantastic extra-time winner against Everton
Well, perhaps that is the big reason. Jeff Astle sadly died at the age of just 59 in 2002, and it was found that the cause had been a degenerative brain disease. The coroner decided that the oft-repeated trauma of heading the old style leather footballs was responsible for Astle's disease. This year a Justice for Jeff campaign was launched, and you might find that after 9 minutes, the away fans launch into spontaneous applause to support the family's campaign. Certainly, this has been the trend at "The Baggies" home games.
Jeff Astle, who was an England International, and was part of England's 1970 World Cup squad in Brazil, scored 174 goals in all competitions for West Brom, over a 10 year playing career at the club between 1964 and 1974, having been signed from Notts County. In latter years, of course, he was much loved on Skinner and Baddiel's Fantasy Football show as an out of key crooner.
West Brom had just two seasons out of the top flight between 1949 and 1986, and often had the upper hand over Spurs in the fifties and sixties, not least when Astle scored two goals in an exciting 4-3 win at The Hawthorns in April, 1969. Jimmy Greaves also scored two for Spurs, with one from the penalty spot.
Currently, West Brom are suffering. The Pepe Mel experiment early this year didn't work and they avoided relegation by one place and three points. It is not the first time they've sailed so close to the wind, with Bryan Robson securing miraculous survival at the end of the 2004-05 season.
Now, their manager is Alan Irvine, who has had previous spells at Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday. High profile arrivals on the transfer market have included Joleon Lescott on a free transfer from Manchester City. Lescott may make his debut on Sunday. Another free transfer was Greek International Giorgos Samaras from Celtic. Chris Baird (from Burnley) and Craig Gardner (from Sundereland) have also been signed without a fee. Liverpool's England under-21 defender Andre Wisdom is on loan for the season.
West Brom are still seeking their first win of the season, when you consider they only got past League Two's Oxford Utd in the Capital One cup after a 7-6 penalty kick shoot-out. Indeed, in the five games they've played so far, only two goals have been scored by a West Brom player and that was Berahino's brace in the opening day 2-2 draw against Sunderland. The "Baggies" goal against Oxford was courtesy of an own goal.
So, West Brom face a tough task on Sunday, and would surely be more than satisfied with a point. However, Mauricio Pochettino is taking no chances with this game, having left Danny Rose, Younes Kaboul, Nacer Chadli, Mousa Dembele, and Emmanuel Adebayor at home while the rest of the Spurs squad travelled to Belgrade.
Spurs' starting line-up will no doubt resemble closely that which drew last week at The Stadium of Light, with perhaps the bulk of last night's team playing next Wednesday's League Cup tie. At some point soon though, we can expect new boys Fazio and Stambouli to cross to the "first team".
I am predicting a 3-1 Spurs win on Sunday.
The match referee will be Kevin Friend, who was last in charge of us in our match at home to Stoke last December, which we won 3-0. That was the last time Aaron Lennon scored a goal!
· 10 years ago this week, Jacques Santini's so solid Spurs crew drew 0-0 at Stamford Bridge
