Spurs travelled to Leicester to play in form Leicester City who beat Sunderland 4-2 in their last match while Spurs suffered a 2-0 loss to Norwich. It was not a great time to play this game as Spurs lost players to International duty. With the likes of Winks, Onomah and Walker-Peters not available, the Spurs squad contained seven U-18 players in the named fifteen while the "Foxes" had seven players with first team experience.
Spurs lined up with McGee in goal behind Maghoma and Carter-Vickers with McQueen at right back and Ogilvie on the left. Walkes and Lesniak protected the back four while McEvoy, Miller and Akindayini supported Harrison up front. Miller played behind Harrison with Akindayini on the left. Leicester used the maxmium of four over-aged players in their starting eleven.
Spurs defended the North end in the first half and began well moving the ball quickly with Miller the focal point. Drinkwater had the first effort which was wide of McGee's goal before Walkes' drive from the edge of the area produced the first save. As with their first team Leicester sought to counter quickly catching the full backs upfield. McCourt had an effort blocked for a corner from which Albrighton fired wide.
Albrighton had another chance from another corner which he sent over the bar. The home side were now pushing Spurs back and Knockaert drew a save from McGee before McCourt drove his effort against the post. Spurs hardly got out of their half and only had a couple of crosses from McEvoy to show for it. Knockaert won a corner, as did Stankevicius with shots before Dodoo headed an Albrighton cross over just before the half ended.
Leicester made one change for the start of the second half sending on left back Fox (ED:- A good name for a Leicester player!). The "Foxes" took the lead when Knockaert was played through on the left and his cross was headed home by Stankevicius. Albrighton was now pulling the strings for the home side providing the cross for McCourt to fire over and also for Fox to fire over at the far post.
Akindayini got behind the defence to draw a save from Hamer before playing in Harrison for a chance that was wide. Knockaert fired wide from a corner before McCourt was booked for a late foul on Ogilvie who had begun to get down the right. From the free kick Leicester broke and had two on one as they caught Spurs players forward. Stankevicius drew Maghoma before playing in Drinkwater to score past the exposed McGee.
Spurs responded with McEvoy providing two crosses for Akindayini to attack. The first was turned wide while Hamer saved the striker's header from the second. The game opened up more and Stankevicius headed over Knockaert's cross. Miller combined with Ogilvie down the right but shot wide before Spurs made their first change replacing Walkes with Azzaoui and changing to 4-4-2. The change worked as Ogilvie played in Azzaoui who timed his run behind perfectly to get into the area and whip the ball across the six yard box for McEvoy to score at the far post.
Leicester had been playing with ten men at the time as Fox was off the pitch receiving treatment and had to be replaced. Stankevicius headed wide before winning a corner from McGee's save. Ogilvie played in Azzaoui for a chance that he put wide. McCourt drew a save from long range before Spurs made their second change. Goddard replaced Miller with Azzaoui pushing up behind the strikers.
Lesniak laid off a clearance for McQueen to shoot but Hamer saved. Albrighton was booked trying to stop Azzaoui going through the middle with Harrison hitting the resultant free kick well over. Leicester were now pulling players back to defend their lead as Spurs pushed forward but were always dangerous on the break. Albrighton fired wide on one break but Pearson broke into the area and won a penalty from Maghoma. McGee got his hands on the kick by McCourt but could not stop it going into the net to give the home side a two goal cushion. Maghoma tried to make amends but his header from a free kick was saved. Drinkwater had the last chance when he fired over on a break.
Spurs' inexperience showed as they made little headway against Leicester having started well. Once the home side closed them down and counter attacked quickly it was only a matter of time before they scored. The introduction of Azzaoui changed things more in Spurs favour and they began to look dangerous. Leicester bided their time to catch Spurs out for the second goal.
Spurs play Chelsea next in a week's time. The game has been moved to Staines Town for TV coverage by BT. The kick-off is at 3.15pm. Spurs beat them at Stevenage 2-1 earlier in the season so will be looking to do the double over their west London opponents.
