Tricky trip to Goodison
We ended last season with a trip to Goodison Park. It was a joyful trip for several reasons. Firstly, we won! Secondly, on the same day Liverpool were thrashed 6-1 at Stoke, and we overtook them to take fifth place and guaranteed entry into the Group Stage of this season's Europa League. Harry Kane scored his record-equalling 21st Premier League goal of the season. Harry scored more Premier Leagaue goals (27) than any other player in 2015.
Spurs start the second half of this season's campaign with what is always a tricky away fixture at Goodison Park. For all the goal-scoring prowess of Romelu Lukaku, and the other talents in their squad, Roberto Martinez's side must surely be described as under-achieving in the Premier League.
The "Toffees" have managed just one win in their last six games, and that was a last gasp winner at Newcastle, where the home side had looked like at least securing a point. At Bournemouth they had been two goals up, before a mad finish with goals by either side in added time led to a 3-3 draw. They drew at home to Crystal Palace and away to Norwich, and will be sore from Monday night's home defeat to Stoke, following another last minute goal by their opponents.
Lukaku is in great personal form with 15 league goals to his name including 11 in his last 10 club games. Lukaku shares top spot in the Premier League scoring chart with Jamie Vardy.
Everton do have a vital mid-week game coming up, because they have reached the Capital One Cup semi-final, and have to play Man City on Wednesday night - also at home. I don't expect any players to be rested for our game, which is just as important for Everton, who are equally distant from the top four and the bottom three. Martinez has several injury worries with James McCarthy out with a hip injury. Tom Cleverley, who scored that winner at Newcastle, is doubtful, and Phil Jagielka is not likely to return until later in the week. Everton face Dagenham & Redbridge in next week's FA Cup third round.
Former Spur Aaron Lennon could face his old team for the first time since joining Everton full time this season. Lennon did not feature in our 0-0 home game in August, because he only joined his new club at the end of the transfer window. Lennon scored two goals whilst on loan in the latter half of last season, so the record of neither Spurs or Everton losing when he scores still stands. The only trouble is that Aaron rarely scores, and this season, rarely plays, having made just 3 league starts, and six substitute appearances. He did start last Saturday at Newcastle. Another former Spur - Steven Pienaar - is also on the injured list.
Apart from Lukaku, the main danger from Everton is likely to be 21 year old Gerard Deulofeu, signed full-time this season from Barcelona, after a previous loan spell in the 2013-14 season. Deulofeu is nippy and a decent crosser of the ball, and also scored on Monday against Stoke.
Goalkeeper Tim Howard, formerly of Manchester United, is one of the longest serving goalkeepers in the Premier League, but is 40 behind Petr Cech, who broke the clean sheet record last week. Howard, who has 106 United States caps, and last played International football in November, is approaching 350 Premier League appearances for Everton. Tomorrow's game will be his 349th Premier League game for the club. Howard is now 36 years old.
Spurs will be missing Mousa Dembele, who sustained an ankle injury last week, and Mauricio Pochettino says he could be out for several weeks. This is a blow, because Dembele has been in great form and was definitely missed in our last defeat at home to Newcastle. Of course, Pochettino has several options, but I fancy Ryan Mason might start beside Dier, with Alli again taking the forward midfield role. Eriksen might face a battle with Son for the other available midfield berth.
Having secured their place in the top four (at least for the moment), Spurs now face a different pressure to stay there. Wins are needed to maintain that position and to pursue the ultimate dream of a Premier League title. Those wins are desired, who ever the opposition. On a week-end when I think the other top four sides will win, I think Spurs might have to settle for a draw, but with the ultra-passionate home crowd, this game really could go either way.
Referee Michael Oliver is one of my favourite officials. We last saw him in our 0-0 against Chelsea, but he was also in charge this season when we beat Palace 1-0. Son scored that day. Could he score again tomorrow?
Did you know? - When Everton hosted Villarreal in a pre-season match (Duncan Ferguson Testimonial) last summer, the crowd of 34,718 was the biggest at Goodison Park for a Non-competitive game since the Dixie Dean Testimonial played in April 1964. On that occasion 36,870 were in attendance.
· Premier League results 10 years ago this week - Spurs went fourth with 37 points, after beating Newcastle 2-0.
