Same again, but (nearly) all change!
Here we go again, as Claudio Ranieri brings his team to White Hart Lane for the second time in four days for a game that both coaches clearly prioritise. That's not surprising bearing in mind their teams currently occupy two of the coveted top four placings, which they hope to retain. Whilst neither team leader likes to mention it in the same breath, both have ambitions regarding the title race too!
Leicester may even include star striker and equal Premier League top scorer Jamie Vardy, who sat out our Cup game with a groin injury. Ranieri will test Vardy, but will hope to have the speedy England International available. No doubt Riyad Mahrez (only two goals behind Vardy in the Premier League chart) will also feature. The two of them would offer a real threat to the Spurs defence, but we did keep Vardy at bay when we visited The King Power Stadium in August. (Leicester 1 Spurs 1 - 22nd August, 2015). Spurs young star Dele Alli, who has just been awarded a fresh 5 year contract, scored his first Premier League goal, only to see Mahrez level the scores a minute later.
Spurs were the last team to prevent Vardy scoring in a Premier League game before he went on his record 11 consecutive league game run of goal-scoring. That groin injury has perhaps hampered Vardy a little, but he hasn't scored in his last four games. In fact, Leicester haven't scored in their last three league games, which have included home goal-less draws against Man City and Bournemouth.
Leicester's other talisman - Mahrez - also featured in those stalemates, but did score 6 goals in "The Foxes" three recent wins against Swansea, Chelsea and Everton. Yes, Leicester achieved better results at home to Chelsea and away to Everton than did Spurs. Ranieri's team have earnt every bit of respect and praise being given them at this time. However, the much-liked manager knows the danger of his team losing momentum.
Spurs will of course welcome back Harry Kane to start this game, after he spent three-quarters of Sunday's cup-tie on the bench. Harry scored his first Premier League hat-trick in last season's corresponding game, which ended in a 4-3 home win. When Leicester arrived at Tottenham that day, they were bottom of the league, but the narrow defeat preceded a great run of 7 wins in their last 9 games which meant they ultimately comfortably survived the drop.
Leicester scored in all but one of those last 9 games, and in fact went on a run of scoring in 18 consecutive Premier League games before going goal-less in their last three.
It might surprise you to know that Leicester's record against Spurs in 19 Premier League meetings is marginally better with one more win, and a better goal difference. That is largely due to too many disappointing performances and defeats at the old Filbert Street Stadium. I remember a horrible 3-0 defeat in September, 1997 when the nation mourned the loss of Princess Diana, whilst I mourned the loss of my father, along with end of season defeats in 2001 and 2002.
Leicester have won three Premier League games at The Lane. The last of these were in 1999, when they beat George Graham's team in April and October We had beaten Martin O'Neill's men in the Worthington Cup Final though!
Leicester's squad, and definitely their fans, still feel sore about the award of a late penalty in Spurs' favour on Sunday, and surely will not need much motivating for tomorrow's game.
Spurs have some good news, with Dembele returning to the squad. I am sure that means he is fit enough to start, with tomorrow's game surely the more demanding of this week's two league games. Ryan Mason is still not ready, although perhaps not far away from fitness.
A win is imperative for Spurs in order to assert their top four and even title credentials. Leicester will justifiably feel they have a chance, but once again, I'm going for a 2-1 home win!
Tomorrow's match referee will be Lee Mason. Mysteriously, he has not taken charge of a Spurs game since December 2014, which was a 0-0 home draw against Crystal Palace.
· In match 21 10 years ago we beat Man City 2-0 away. Those were the days!
