Tea-time Cup Final!

It seems strange that we have had to endure an Easter week-end without Premier League football, but this is not unprecedented in the Premier League era. The last time we had an International break co-inciding with the Easter Festival was the last week-end in March 2005.

Probably the most famous Easter meetings with Liverpool were in 1963, when we were also chasing the League title. On Good Friday April 12th 1963, we arrived at Anfield in second place (having spent a total of 15 weeks that season at the top of the table), and lost 5-2. In those days we often played three games over the Easter week-end, and Spurs drew at home to Fulham on Easter Saturday, before thrashing "The Reds" at White Hart Lane on Easter Monday by a massive 7-2 scoreline, climbing back to the top of the table. Jimmy Greaves scored four of our goals. Ian St. John, who in later years became "Greavsie"'s TV partner was in the Liverpool team, and had scored one of Liverpool's goals in their Anfield win.

In our next game that season, we crucially lost 1-0 at Goodison Park, and fell to third. We never recovered and finished the season runners-up 6 points behind "The Toffees". We did famously win the Cup-Winners' Cup though!

The last time we played two games at Easter was April 7th & 9th 2012. We drew at Sunderland away on the Saturday lunch-time (0-0), and lost at home to Norwich on Easter Monday. We still managed to finish fourth that season in Harry Redknapp's last year, but those poor Easter results, plus a 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road prevented us from winning a Champions League place. Even the legend that is Ledley King had to admit to a final dip in form and the ability to play through his chronic knee injury. That QPR game was Ledley's final game.

Ledley had made his Spurs debut at Anfield in May 1999 at the age of just 18, and as a second half left back, due to the absence of Mauricio Taricco, who had been sent off for a second bookable offence by referee Stephen Lodge. Spurs had been 2-0 up in that game at Anfield, but lost 3-2 following the sending-off. It was one of those games when Jamie Carragher scored an own goal for us! You may like to read this classic report by Bruce Lewis.

We lost last year's game at Anfield by the same margin of 3-2. "Bad boy" Mario Balotelli had ruined our chances of a tilt at the Premier League title in January 2012 with a 90th minute penalty for Man City. That penalty was conceded by Ledley King, and that made the score 3-2. Balotelli, who had a poor time at Anfield, scored his one and only Premier League goal for Brendan Rodgers' side in the 83rd minute to also secure a 3-2 win.

The last time we played Liverpool was also after an International break in October. Jurgen Klopp had replaced Rodgers, and we were his first opponents as Liverpool manager. The result was a hard-fought 0-0, which meant that Klopp had failed to arrest Liverpool's run of drawn games, which had been part of the reason for Rodgers' departure. The "Reds" went on to draw another two games after Spurs, making 8 out of 9 games drawn under the two leaders.

Liverpool were 10th when they came to The Lane in October, and they are ninth now, although they do have two games in hand over some teams above them. Under Klopp, Liverpool remain an enigma. they just lost the Capital One Cup Final against Man City on penalties, but got a convincing 3-0 revenge three days later in the League. Liverpool just lost an FA Cup 4th round replay at Upton Park at the very end of extra time.

Liverpool beat their rivals Manchester United well in their Europa League Round of 16, and will now face Klopp's last team Borussia Dortmund next week in the quarter-final. That will be a very interesting game indeed!

Klopp will not have given up on the idea of making the top four with those games in hand, consisting of 6 home games and only three away. It's not a bad run-in either with their harder games at home against us, and Chelsea, with a Merseyside Derby match to come as well.

While they remain in the hunt for a first League title in 55 years, Spurs must treat every remaining game like a Cup Final. The good news is that all our International players seem to have arrived back in good shape, although Erik Lamela's final assessment was being left till later, due to his lengthier journey and later arrival. Toby Alderweireld had suffered some illness whilst away with Belgium, but Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed his 100% fitness.

Jan Vertonghen is training and nearing match fitness, but will not be ready just yet. All eyes, especially those of Liverpool will be on our England boys, particularly Harry Kane and Dele Alli, who have featured prominently in the news reports of England's programme, particularly the win over Germany. Call me biased if you like, but I don't think the Liverpool England contingent impressed as much as our lads.

Of course, it is going to be a tough game, and we haven't got a great record at Anfield. Liverpool's main danger may come from two of their Brazilians - Coutinho and Firmino. Either of these players is capable of that touch of magic which can change the course of a game.

It really is a game that could produce any result, but I am optimistically going for a 2-1 win for Spurs. Such a result would close the gap for at least a day before Leicester play Southampton. I think all the teams chasing us should win this week-end, so a win really is required to keep our momentum going.

Referee Jon Moss has been in charge of two of our games this season, both of which have also been away from home. Mr. Moss took charge of our opening day defeat at Old Trafford, and our 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns in December. Let's hope he can complete the set of three results on Saturday tea-time!
