Spurs to gain ground in title chase!
Watford's home defeat to Spurs on December 28th heralded a run of four consecutive league defeats for the Hertfordshire Club that had been unbeaten in five games until they met Spurs, losing to Son Heung-min's excellent back-heeled winner. (Watford 1 Spurs 2 28.12.15)
The fixture list has given us quick return games in two consecutive games, and whilst Spurs won at Carrow Road on Tuesday night, Watford hosted Chelsea on Wednesday, and fought hard for a 0-0 draw. Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes made a couple of great saves late in the game and was named as the man of the match by BT Sport.
Gomes will get a great reception from the Spurs fans, judging by the affection displayed for him at Vicarage Road in December. His predecessor Paul Robinson - also held in great affection by Spurs fans - scored when Watford last visited White Hart Lane in March 2007. (Spurs 3 Watford 1 - 17.03.07) Robinson embarrassed "The Hornets" on loan keeper Ben Foster with a goal directly from a free kick taken deep into the Spurs half. Foster was on loan from Man Utd, and it was a United keeper (Alex Stepney) who had been beaten the previous time a Spurs goalkeeper had scored in an official game. That had famously been Pat Jennings in the Charity Shield game in 1967.
Watford have yet to win a Premier League game against Spurs (This is only our sixth such meeting), but they did win three successive games at White Hart Lane between 1982 and 1985. I was so intrigued by this fact (and one big home defeat for Spurs) that I asked my good friend Declan Mulcahy if he could put any meat on the bone regarding these results. Declan has come up with this splendid detailed article - Spurs' defeats to Watford 1982-85 - which includes lots of information of interest to both sets of fans.
Watford manager Quique Flores has been busy again in the transfer market. With 33 points on the board, and ninth place in the Premier League, Watford can not only look forward to the even bigger financial benefits next season, when the latest Premier league deals kick in, but they will also have an eye on qualifying for European football.
Latest signings include 28 year old Spanish midfielder Mario Suarez, signed from Fiorentina, but previously known to Flores at Atletico Madrid. Nordin Amrabat is a Moroccan born attacking player, signed from Malaga, and goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon has signed from Sunderland.
With Ighalo and Deeney still going strong, Spurs will have their work cut out to keep an eager Watford team at bay.
It's good news for Spurs that despite feeling unwell when he was replaced at half-time at Norwich, Dele Alli is available for selection. Ryan Mason is close to a return to action, and has been traaining fully again. However, I don't expect him to start tomorrow, where the Spurs team will not differ much from that which beat Norwich. I suspect that Chadli, Lamela and Son will be vying for the one vacant midfield slot next to Alli and Eriksen, behind Harry Kane.
By the time we play, we will know the result of the Man City v Leicester game. I'm hoping for a draw and lost points for both Spurs rivals in the title chase. It still feels unreal typing that! Spurs have to do their job, and I think it will be tight, going for my old faithful prediction of 2-1!
Tomorrow's match referee will be Roger East. On the one hand he was in charge of our 5-1 away win at Bournemouth. On the other he was in charge when we lost at home to Newcastle. Let's hope the result is nearer to the one for Bournemouth!
