Spurs travelled to Aldershot for the away fixture against Chelsea who sit tenth in the table having lost their last match 2-0 to Manchester City, while Spurs were in third place after their 1-1 draw with Liverpool. Last season Spurs fought out a creditable 0-0 draw at Staines Town in front of the TV cameras in April. Seven of those Chelsea players started tonight's game whereas Spurs lined up with four of the same players.
Spurs only made one change to the team that started against Liverpool. Spurs lined up with Glover in goal behind Carter-Vickers and Veljkovic with Walker-Peters at right back and Amos on the left. Lesniak defended in front of them with Stylianides while Walkes supported Harrison up front with McEvoy on his right and Georgiou on his left. On the bench were four players from the last Academy game, who are likely to go to Brighton for tomorrow's U-18 game. (Saturday 31st October, 2015)
Spurs kicked off the first half attacking the North end up the slope with McEvoy putting over crosses into the area which were mainly well defended by Tomori and Clarke-Salter who only conceded one corner from half a dozen balls in from both flanks. The corner produced a header from Carter-Vickers which was an easy catch for Beeney.
Spurs had most of the possession in the opening period but "The Blues" did manage a few breaks which produced a corner. Clarke-Salter headed over from that. The pressure finally told when Spurs went in front. Chelsea failed to clear an attack with the ball coming out to Lesniak who slipped it in to Harrison to score.
The home side had a chance just afterwards when Dasilva got past Walker-Peters and crossed for Abraham. The ball was cleared. Abraham won a free kick outside the area when Carter-Vickers when over the top of him but Colkett hit it well over. A cross from Georgiou was not cleared and McEvoy had a run and shot from the right which was saved well by Beeney. That was the last chance of the half.
There were no changes for the start of the second half. Chelsea started more positively with Musonga firing over before Georgiou got in a cross that found McEvoy coming in at the far post. His attempt was blocked for a corner. From the corner Stylianides saw his low shot deflected just wide of the far post for another corner. The corner from Walkes reached Veljkovic at the far post via a Chelsea head and the Spurs captain drove it in inside the near post to double the visitors' lead.
This prompted a double substitution by Chelsea which took a minute to complete but did not change things for the home side quickly enough as Spurs got a third. Lesniak sent Georgiou away down the left and his low cross was met by Harrison who drove it into the corner of the net for his second of the evening.
Chelsea made their last change and they seemed to go for it and got stuck in. Musonda hit a free kick over and Glover saved from Muheim before Spurs made their first change replacing Stylianides with Loft who went up front with Harrison dropping into midfield.
Muheim fired wide before a counter attack saw Harrison draw a save from Beeney. Bennetts was the next change for Spurs replacing Amos on the left with Georgiou moving to left back. From a Spurs corner Chelsea broke upfield ending with Muheim firing wide. Spurs were now dropping off as they sought to see out the game which allowed Abraham to have his first shot of the game which was saved by Glover.
Spurs took off McEvoy for Maghoma to add to the defence but the changes led to Chelsea getting a goal when Aina got down the right and crossed for Abraham to use his height advantage to score with a header. Scott had got round the back only for Glover to save, and clashed with Walker-Peters in midfield. Such was his frustration. Spurs almost got a fourth in added time when Loft took on Tomori and Clarke-Salter for a through ball and got into the area before his effort was blocked for a corner.
This was a good performance from Spurs building on their last two games. Spurs took the game to Chelsea and were the better side over the ninety minutes scoring three good goals, although they did allow their opponents to get a consolation. Last season at U-18 level the two teams played each other five times with Harrison and Abraham each scoring six goals for their side. Carter-Vickers had two solid games against the Chelsea striker to prevent him scoring in those games. Today he continued and Abraham only had three chances from which he did score one goal. Harrison had more chances and scored twice.
The win moves Spurs above Reading on goal difference into second place. Their next game is away to Middlesbrough at the end of November. Before that they play FC Schalke in the Premier League International Cup. That will be on Tuesday evening at Stevenage. Schalke beat Everton in their last game 1-0.
