It was a cloudy afternoon that turned to rain in the second half with a wind blowing from the south that caused problems for the keepers. Today's visitors came with only two points from four games having lost their last match 3-1 at Southampton. Spurs themselves came into today's fixture having lost their last three. The game itself was supposed to be played at the King Power Stadium but the fixtures were reversed.
Spurs lined up with Whiteman making his first appearance at this level in goal behind Carter-Vickers and Maghoma with Walker-Peters at right back and Amos on the left. Lesniak and Walkes screened the back four with Harrison ahead of them flanked by McEvoy on the right and Georgiou on the left supporting Sterling up front. With the League Cup on Wednesday Spurs had a short bench which included the other Academy goalkeeper.
Spurs kicked off the first half with the wind at their back and sought to keep the ball on the deck moving it around the field well. The first forty-five minutes was a tight affair with few chances, played at a good tempo. Spurs had an early chance following a corner when Amos drove just wide. Georgiou had an effort blocked which fell to Harrison who fired over. Fox got through to shoot wide while Amos got forward to also drill wide before Spurs took the lead.
Walker-Peters made a run through the right channel before his pass was deflected wide to Georgiou who crossed for Sterling to finish. McEvoy put in a cross for Sterling which was blocked for a corner which was taken short. Georgiou whipped the ball into the near post where Carter-Vickers converted to increase the home side's lead. Spurs looked comfortable but Davis hit the far post with a header from a corner and when the ball was not cleared Panayiotou was in the right place to head home in added time.
Leicester made a change for the second half which paid dividends inside two minutes. King, who had come on for Fox, arrived in the area at the near post to meet a cross from the right that was blocked. However, he fired in the rebound to draw Leicester level. They were not level for long though, as Walkes released McEvoy on the right to drive into the area and score with a rising shot.
Whiteman saved a long range effort from Cain, before sending Harrison away on the counter to lay it off for Lesniak to fire wide. The game opened up with the ball going from end to end. Walker-Peters - wearing the number 20 shirt - cleared off the line from Chaudhury. There was a spell of possession as Spurs moved the ball around before being played out to Georgiou on the left. His early cross to the far post was met by McEvoy with a diving header to open up another two goal lead.
It was nearly a three-goal lead when McEvoy got down the line and crossed to the far post for Sterling to head in only for the goal to be ruled off side. The "Foxes" pulled a goal back when Davis fired the ball through a crowd of players at a corner. Two minutes later they were level again. A cross-field ball found Ndukwu free on the left and his centre was converted by Panayiotou.
This was schoolboy stuff and it was not long before Spurs regained the lead in great style. Leicester could only clear their area to Harrison who controlled the ball on his chest before volleying into the goal. It did take a deflection but was still a good strike. That was the sixth goal in just over twenty minutes of the second half.
Spurs made their first change replacing Sterling with Veljkovic to strenghten the defence. He was followed by a like for like change of Sonupe for McEvoy on the right. City tried to respond with Barmby firing wide and Cain driving over either side of a double change to improve their attack. They paid the price when Sonupe was played in through the middle and he won a penalty when Davis stopped him in the area. Harrison stepped up placing his spot kick inside the left post with the keeper going the wrong way.
Spurs got another goal when Harrison got through down the middle and Maddison came out to block his effort which dropped nicely for Lesniak to score the eleventh goal of the game. Spurs replaced Georgiou with Goddard and looked to see out the game. Barmby fired over and Harrison drew a save from Maddison before Sonupe was booked for a challenge on Barnes. Sonupe had the last chance of the game which was saved by the keeper.
While the spectators enjoyed the goals I'm sure the coaches were tearing their hair out as the game went from a tight tactical affair into open end to end play. It was a much better performance from Spurs after last week's game at Stevenage where they had very little space to work in. Their next game will be at Carrow Road on October 15th which saw them well beaten by Norwich last season. It will again be shown live on BT. Norwich allowed free admission because it was being televised and were rewarded with a record crowd of over 10,000.
